Feeling Comfortable at Baker St. Pub & Grill

The folks at Baker St. invited me out to sample some of their comfort food items. I occasionally go to the Baker St. out in Willowbrook to watch a little football on Sundays. It had been years since my last visit to the Rice Village location, but I had fond memories of a packed bar and great beer. There was a different vibe this Saturday evening, but one I could certainly enjoy. The people watching college football created a nice low buzz, and for lack of a better description, the place felt like a pub, which it was.

I sampled some fish & chips, Mum's Meatloaf, and the shepherd's pie. All were well prepared and reasonably priced (between $8.99 and $9.99). The portions for the meatloaf and shepherd's pie were adequate, yet not excessive. This is something I appreciated, given the heaviness of comfort food. I do, however, recommend either getting a half order of the fish and chips or splitting a full order with a friend or two.

The biggest hit was the Mum's Meatloaf. I wanted more gravy, but other than that, no complaints with the dish. The nicely formed squares of ground beef were tasty and moist on the inside, and had a delicious char-grilled crust. These marks made for a beautiful presentation and provided extra flavor. The meatloaf came with mashed potatoes and green beans. Both sides were delicious and a perfect complement to the meat.
The fish & chips were pretty standard, a little greasy, but that's certainly expected with this dish. Baker St. didn't skimp on the cod, and the big hit was the mound of seasoned fries. I had to stop myself.

The final entrée was the shepherd's pie. This meaty, cheesy bowl, topped with creamy mashed potatoes and a tomato slice, was the definition of comfort food. It was packed with the traditional veggies: carrots, celery, peas, and onions. This shepherd's pie was hearty, slightly greasy, but all good.

They brought out some seasonal applecranberry cobbler, and although wonderfully decorated with scoops of vanilla ice cream and caramel, this dessert just didn't do it for me. The cobbler base had some nice flavors, but was too mushy.

A Newcastle Brown Ale and some of that meatloaf or shepherd's pie would be perfect on a cold day, or night.
