This Sunday, celebrate Labor Day by enjoying the labors of others at Under the Volcano's 13th Annual Chili Cook-Off. The cauldrons will be boiling all day, but the public are invited out to dig in from 4 to 9 p.m. at the popular Rice Village bar. Johnny Falstaff will be playing to the crowds and the Volcano tells us that there are still spots available for chili cooks, if you're feeling ambitious. Call 713-526-5282 for more information.

Next Tuesday is Brazilian Independence Day. And the brand-new Samba Grille has chosen that date to celebrate their grand opening, as well as the culture, music and food of Brazil. The churrascaria will be offering happy hour prices on Brazilian beer (Xingu Black), cocktails (the caipirinha) and wine all night long, starting at 4:30 p.m. In addition, the evening churrascaria service will be discounted to $30 per person, leaving you to reap the meaty benefits while you enjoy Carnivale dancers and live music from Lois Albez. Reservations can be made by calling 713-343-1180.
Fans of Lynette Hawkins' oasis in River Oaks, Giacomo's Cibo e Vino, will want to head out September 8 to help her celebrate the restaurant's one-year anniversary. In celebration, Hawkins is introducing a new antipasto menu featuring Cichetti Caldi (hot antipasti) to partner with her already popular cold antipasti dishes. No dish is over $7 and the menu features items like crepes filled with swiss chard and fontina val d'aosta, baked with béchamel and Parmigiano, and spicy lamb meatballs with green lentil stew.
Just because Houston Restuarant Week has finished doesn't mean that the Houston Food Bank doesn't still need your help. Throughout the month of September, you can help fight hunger while quenching your thirst at a series of Happy Hours for Hunger, starting on September 5 at Poison Girl. From 8 p.m. to close, a percentage of sales will be donated to the Houston Food Bank.
The same goes for Beaver's, which will be hosting the happy hour on September 15; The Tasting Room at River Oaks, which will be hosting on September 22; and The Harp, which will be hosting on September 28. A special edition of the happy hour will be hosted on September 26 at Anvil in partnership with the Houston Chowhounds, during which Anvil will give back 20 percent of its sales to the Houston Food Bank and will also be holding a canned food drive and auction.
