The Cheeseburger at Taqueria Abasolo

A co-worker told me about the burger at Taqueria Abasolo (1109 Hogan St.), saying it was huge. So I popped by for lunch. When I walked in, the first thing I noticed, besides the fact that I was the only white person in the place, was all the kitschy knick-knacks hanging on the wall. I mean, it was floor to ceiling.

The small eatery had a few tables, and most of them were filled with customers watching really bad sitcoms on Telemundo. I sat at a table in the corner and noticed a picture of Selena holding a rose on the wall, along with beer advertising and Hispanic hip-hop promotional fliers.

I ordered the cheeseburger with a Coke. The patty came with cheese, lettuce, ham, bacon, some chopped lettuce and mayonnaise. When the server put the sandwich on the table in front of me, it wasn't as big as my co-worker had claimed. It was big, but it wasn't "huge." The cheese was melted to almost a liquid. The mayonnaise was squirted all over the sandwich in a squeeze bottle fashion. The bacon looked fried, and the bun was a sesame seed, industrial-looking thing. And when I bit into the burger, all I tasted was ham and American cheese.

You know what? It was delicious. It reminded me of cafeteria food, but really good cafeteria food.
