Odd Pair: Ched 'R' Peppers & Onion Rings

Categories: Odd Pair

If you're a true Sonic connoisseur, you've probably figured out that this week's post involves two of their deliciously fried side orders. The not-so-cleverly-named ched 'r' peppers are mild jalapenos stuffed with cheddar cheese, breaded and deep fried, and the classically delicious and slightly sweet iconic onion rings. Between the heavy, fried, battered and at least in the case of the onion rings, slightly sweet selections, it seemed a cheap Riesling would do the trick.

I've had many a good screw top wine -- white or red -- so when I encountered a corkless bottle of Fish Eye Riesling, I had no qualms at all. How could I have been so blind to reality? Apparently some things from Australia aren't as awesome as others. Dingos: awesome. Steve Irwin: slightly annoying, but still awesome. Fish Eye Riesling: not awesome. The initial taste is that of Band-Aids, a finish of battery acid with some light fruit flavors sandwiched between the two. Needless to say, the odd pairing was doomed from the start.

Hoping the copious amounts of grease from both the onion rings and ched 'r' peppers would magically cut through all the shitty flavors of the cheap wine, I trudged on in the name of blogging. All I could say for the pairing was that the slightly sweet Sonic batter on both the onion rings and the stuffed jalapenos did nothing but enhance the Band-Aid/plastic flavor of the wine, and the taste of the wine was so spectacularly disgusting that it would have made rusty metal seem appetizing. So essentially, the fried stuff from Sonic still tasted amazing despite the wretched Riesling that had tried so hard to ruin my night of fun. Moral of the story: don't drink Fish Eye Riesling -- even grease can't make it taste good.
