Creole Creamery

What's cooler than being cool? Ice cream...in New Orleans. Having appeared on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and Kid in a Candy Store on the Food Network, media darling Creole Creamery had a lot to live up to.

With chef Bryan Gilmore at the helm, Creole Creamery offers flavors ranging from the comforting favorites to the absolutely crazy. While it wasn't available at our visit, the Beet Generation flavor appeared on TV. It involves beets, a vodka reduction, and lots of other interesting components; apparently, it's really, really good. Too bad we hit them up at the wrong time.

Lucky for us, beets aren't the only flavoring agent for this spectacularly creamy ice cream. For $4.50 (cash only), we got a mini-scoop sampler with four different flavors. Don't let the word "mini" fool you - it's a lot of ice cream.

Thai Basil Coconut was surprisingly refreshing, with more basil flavor than coconut. Black and Gold Crunch was full of coffee, banana and chocolate flavors, with lots of texture (chocolate chips, etc.). The White Chocolate with Pink Peppercorns was super-creamy and rich, but pepped up by the hint of pepper. And the Dark Chocolate Ginger was not lacking in the ginger department.

Our favorites of the day were the Black and Gold Crunch and the White Chocolate. While we'd suggest them to you for your next NOLA visit, we fear they might not appear on the menu, so just take the flavor plunge and try something new. This place certainly lives up to the media hype in creativity and execution.
