$7 at Dacapo's Pastry Café
Where: Dacapo's Pastry Café, 1141 E. 11th Street, 713-869-9141
What $7 gets you: A gorgeous ALT sandwich on fresh-baked honey wheat bread with a small side of carrot soufflé and a pickle, all served in a cute-as-pie café in the heart of the Heights.
Recommended: If you're as obsessed with avocados as we are, definitely. The ALT packs in the slippery slices of creamy avocado, adds a thick slice of provolone cheese, and tops it off with fresh tomato. A quick dust of mayonnaise gives the sandwich a bit of a tang, and the bread is lightly toasted to give it a slight heft. The complete package is a summery sensation: a simple and simply delicious way to spend your lunch hour.
Don't like avocado? While we don't understand how that's possible, Dacapo's has plenty of $7.50 options for your kind, too. We love the Healthy Pollo Supreme (sliced chicken breast with lettuce, tomato, and a mustard-mayo mix) and the unique Tuna Salad (a light mix of tuna, sweet relish, red onion, celery, and hard-cooked eggs, topped with lettuce and tomato). All sandwiches come with a small side of pea salad, pasta salad, carrot soufflé, fresh fruit, or potato salad. We're semi-obsessed with the velvety carrot soufflé, a rich cube of dessert-like goodness that poses as a vegetable, but the pea salad is a worthy choice, too.
Bonus points: You're in a pastry shop! After lunch, test-drive any number of the fabulous desserts on display. The cookies are soft and delicious with just the right amount of crunch. If you're looking for something bigger-badder-sweeter, try the mango tres leches or strawberry bread pudding.
