Robb Walsh's 100 Favorite Houston Dishes: #27 Warm Glazed Donuts at Shipley's on Ella
Over the course of the next few months, I'm counting down 100 of my favorite Houston dishes. I chose some because they are such quintessential Houston creations, others for their cultural or historical significance, and others because they are just so damn tasty. #27 Warm Glazed Donuts at Shipley's on Ella
When Ed Levine from the Serious Eats website came to Houston to check out our civic specialties, I drove him straight from the airport to Shipley's on Ella.
At this tiny old doughnut shop, there is no such thing as a cold doughnut -- all donuts are fried to order. He got a dozen, and they were mind-blowing.
During my "Donut Patrol" assignment, a commenter named mamamia2 wrote: "I have been to almost EVERY SHIPLEY'S IN HOUSTON...I had not been to the one on Ella until I got to high school. It's the best damn donut place in the world...& I honestly think there is crack in them. I'm going this morning!"
The first Friday in June (that's today) is National Donut Day, which was established in 1938 as a fundraiser for the Salvation Army and to honor women of the Salvation Army who served donuts to soldiers during World War I. Dunkin' Donuts, Krispy Kreme and other chains will be running promotions.
Free cold donuts do not tempt me in the least. Today, I will be buying my National Donut Day donut at the Shipley's on Ella.
