Katharine Shilcutt Will Be the Next Food Critic at the Houston Press
She sat through and videotaped the complete butchering of a pig. She also authored our June 10 cover story that went with the video, about how local restaurateurs are curing their own meats.
Kid Katharine says, "Seconds, please."
She organized a Cupcake Smackdown that pitted 11 professional cupcake bakers (and one home cook) against each other in the search for the perfect Houston cupcake. She found the ten best restaurants in neighborhoods all over Houston, reported industry gossip, and photographed a tatted-up chef in nothing but his apron for the Houston Press Eating...Our Words blog.
She did all this in addition to her duties as web editor for the Houston Press, but now Katharine Shilcutt will move to the position of fulltime food critic for the Press -- as soon as we hire someone to fill her position as web editor.
Associate Editor Cathy Matusow, who oversees and edits Eating ...Our Words as well as our in-print café reviews, said Shilcutt stood out among the other candidates who applied to fill the position vacated by Robb Walsh in March.
"Katharine has already done some outstanding writing for the Press," Matusow said. "Her work gets a reaction out of people, and that's what we want. I'm thrilled."
We were going to wait to announce this till Shilcutt was able to step into her new position, but several of you smart somebodies out there - alerted by the fact that we posted the web editor job - started pestering us about what was up. And so we decided to tell you.
