This time of year, the stores are inundated with tons of egg coloring kits containing all sorts of artificial dyes and decorations to delight our whimsical fancies. These kits can be tons of fun and often impart great uniform color to the eggs. However, it seems that lately more and more people are looking for natural alternatives to chemicals. If you're such a person and have the time and inclination, then try out some of these simple recipes for using natural foods to color your Easter eggs. Not to mention the peace of mind you'll experience when you're turning the leftovers into an all-natural egg salad the next day.

The easiest way to do this is to place the food dye materials in water and boil the egg with it until the egg is hard boiled. If not, you can make the dye by itself and add the boiled egg to it later. Add about a tablespoon or so of vinegar to the water with the dye. This helps the egg absorb more color. And the more dye material you use, the more intense the color will be. Same for leaving the egg in the dye water longer. If you're looking for a little organic Easter fun this year, try some of these out for yourself.

10. Boiled Spinach Leaves and Green Apple Peels
This imparts a lovely green hue to the egg. The spinach must be boiled, so it's probably best to boil the egg, apple peel, and spinach together. If it's not green enough when the egg is boiled, leave the egg in the water overnight in the fridge.

9. Boiled Red Onion Skins, Canned Cherries with Juice, Raspberries
Any or all of these together should produce a lovely red tinge to your eggs. If going with the onions go ahead and boil them with the eggs.

8. Strong coffee
Brew yourself a strong cuppa joe, then drop your egg in it. This turns such an earthy shade of brown, we're sure you'll be pleasantly surprised.

7. Beets
This will give you anywhere from a nice light pink to a fantastic fuchsia depending on how many beets you use. Quarter the root, add it to the water and boil with the eggs.

6. Grape Juice
Happen to have some of Welch's finest in the fridge? Then drop a few huevos in a glass for a soothing purplish tint that is pure Easter.

5. Orange Peel
Remove the peel from an orange, add it to the water, place the eggs on the bottom of the pan and boil for about 15 minutes. Pastel bliss right here.

4. Blueberries
Crush up the fruit, boil it with the egg, and get ready for a pale, stormy blue that clearly didn't come out of a package. Very pretty!

3. Yellow Onion Skins, Carrots, Paprika, and Chili Powder
No, this is not some cool new dish. But if you add to the water with your vinegar and eggs and boil the heck out of it, you should end up with a nice bright orange.

2. Dill Seeds
Here's another adventurous color that you're not going to see in our PAAS box. Boil the dill seeds with the water and eggs to achieve an extremely unique, organic golden brown.

1. Violet Blossoms, Red Wine, and Hibiscus Tea
It sounds like an amazing new cocktail (and feel free to try that, too), but if you combine all of these to color your eggs with, you'll be pleasantly surprised to find the most charming violet purple hue dancing on your Easter treats. This was by far our favorite shade of the whole lot.
