Odd Pair: Reese's Peanut Butter Eggs

A peanut butter and grape jelly sandwich. That's the way our wine guru described this week's Odd Pair. You may be scratching your head, thinking, "How can wine and candy taste like a sandwich?" Well, surprisingly, it can.

This week, we're pairing leftover Reese's Peanut Butter Eggs with wine. Arguably the best Easter candy around, it didn't make an easy subject. "Can you make homemade peanut butter cups instead of prepackaged?" our wine guru asked. "If you put a little cayenne in the peanut butter mousse, it will be easier to pair with wine and taste better." Well, that does sound like a good idea for a future posting. But, for this one, we're sticking to tradition.

Our wine guru suggested the El Bon Homme from Valencia, Spain. This dark, inky red wine smelled strongly of alcohol and not much else. We let it breathe for a bit before we risked pairing it with our sacred Easter candy. We were a bit skeptical of our wine guru's suggestions, but he assured us that the grape and chocolate flavors of the wine would go well with our Reese's.

Shame on us for doubting our wine guru -- the pairing was great. The gooey chocolate-and-peanut butter combo brought out the chocolate flavor of the wine while muting its initial strong bite. Despite the sweetness of the candy, the pairing was not too sweet overall. It tasted exactly like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Being huge fans of peanut butter and jelly, we will definitely be trying the combo again and again.
