Top 5 Vegan-Friendly Foods Even Carnivores Will Love

Categories: Top Five

Bring up "vegan food," and it's unlikely your next thought will be "delicious." True there are a lot of wholesome brown foods found in the vegan world, and the only thing scarier to most Americans than health food is Kim Jong Il's nuclear missiles. Regardless, there are some lesser known meat- and dairy-free treats that all people would enjoy. Below are five of our favorites.

5. Morningstar Farms Maple Flavored Veggie Sausage Patties

Now, we're not the kind of people to overtly deceive our friends and tell them something comes from a pig when it doesn't. But if they don't ask, we usually don't tell. And with this breakfast delight, we don't have to. We cannot begin to recount the number of times we have served this as part of a brunch menu to our meat-eating acquaintances and have gotten nothing but rave reviews on it. We've even been asked if we seasoned the sausage ourselves. Fry the patties in a little olive oil, sprinkle on some sea salt, and breakfast is served.

4. Hail Merry: Merry's Blonde Macaroons

We discovered these little treasures on a recent visit to Whole Foods. We were skeptical at first, because they're not really cookies, but rather doughy little coconut balls. And though they aren't exactly low in fat, the package claims (and packages never lie) that our bodies actually like the monounsaturated fatty acids found in the coconut oil. So basically we get to eat a delicious coconut-y sweet treat and still feel guilt-free. We cannot keep these goodies in the house for more than a day without the entire family gobbling them up.

3. Amy's Roasted Vegetable Pizza

Pizza without cheese? Doesn't sound too great, we know. But somehow, it is! Amy's starts this scrumptious pie off with a hearty whole-grain rice crust, then tops it off with organic olive oil, tomatoes, and a medley of other veggies that actually taste good. It sounds weird, but it works. We always have to end up sharing at least half of this single-serving entree.

2. Uncle Eddie's Vegan: Oatmeal and Chocolate-Chip Cookies

We know there are many amazing vegan cookies out there, but Uncle Eddie's are our personal favorite. They have several flavors to choose from, but we like the substantive texture of the oatmeal blended seamlessly with the creaminess of the chocolate. You can actually pronounce every ingredient listed on the package, which is a plus. We brought some home yesterday and after having a few non-vegan friends over, the bag was totally empty. Not even a crumb.

1. Rice Dream Chocolate Frozen Pie

All right, so maybe we have a sweet tooth right now, but these things are truly decadent. A heavenly thick layer of creamy "rice cream" is sinfully sandwiched between two oatmeal cookies and covered with chocolate. We tried our first one yesterday while babysitting a niece, and let's just say we were lucky she didn't go after ours once she had finished her own. It was definitely family feud-inducing stuff. We can't wait until it gets even hotter outside and we have an actual excuse to indulge in this delightfully icy extravagance.
