Kingwood Donuts

On a jaunt into Kingwood the other morning, our brain a jumble of repetitive street names, we stumbled across a donut shop in another well-landscaped brick strip mall.

And while we haven't made any sort of badge-and-gun transfer from Robb Walsh to patrol the donut beat, we found Kingwood Donuts (20669 West Lake Houston Parkway) to our liking and thought it worth sharing.

The sausage and cheese kolache was a disappointment (it was like a hot dog bun filled with a link and some orange paste, not anything homemade), but the two donuts we sampled more than passed muster.

The plain cake variety had a wonderful vanilla aroma, and the texture was excellent -- soft and spongy inside, with a hint of crunch on the outside. Too many bites without a sip of coffee got a bit pasty on the throat, but in our experience that's pretty common.

The glazed buttermilk was the better of the two. It had nice crisp edges, with a light, airy flavor. This time the vanilla was present in the taste as well as the scent. They laid the glaze on a little thick, but it didn't overpower the flavor.

Both donuts were even more excellent with an iced coffee, though a certain overpriced chain was the only nearby option and we wound up paying more for the java than we did for the kolache, both donuts and a bottle of water combined ($3.01).
