Stirred and Shaken: Taps House of Beer's Pear Pleasure
Certain Washington Avenue bars achieve a state of near-tolerability around the middle of the week, but I still managed to encounter some weekend conduct on a Tuesday trip to Taps House of Beer (5120 Washington Ave., 281-701-4248). I was getting the bartender's recipe for the vodka-based Pear Pleasure shot he had just made when a couple of happy-hour troopers, wounded pretty bad but still fighting at 11 p.m., assaulted me.![]()

"Your mustache is out of style," the first one said, squeezing my hand and refusing to let go. I explained that my longtime facial accessory was a timeless, singular statement. "Oh, I do lots of singular things," her friend chimed in, violently raising one eyebrow. I broke away without explaining that "singular" doesn't really mean "by yourself" and went to look for the bathroom, taking a wrong turn onto the patio. I briefly considered peeing outside — there were nothing but guys, some smoking cigars, a few playing beanbag toss and at least one group apparently just watching whoever walked through the back door. "Hey bro, sweet mustache," was the only convincing I needed to take it back inside.
