If there is an iconic meatball in Houston, it must be one served on top of he spaghetti at Doyle's on 34th Street in Garden Oaks between Ella and T.C. Jester. Opened in 1954, Doyle's was one of the first restaurants in the city to offer pizza. But what really brought generations of Houstonians to this Italian-Cajun/Creole-American restaurant with an Irish name is the plate of spaghetti and meatballs.

Doyle's menu devotes half a page to the available variations. The plate shown in the photo is called "Spaghetti Works." It includes spaghetti with two meatballs, red sauce with meat and mushrooms, and a topping of melted mozzarella cheese. It sells for $8.95. Spaghetti with meat sauce and two meatballs is $6.95; spaghetti with meatballs in plain tomato sauce is $5.95. Doyle's also sells a unique Space City variation of a submarine sandwich called the "Meatball Missile."
