The Mysteries of Lucky Burger

The manager at Lucky Burger, at 1601 Richmond, doesn't know why the greasy spoon she runs looks like a giant blue pickle barrel, or why it was built that way (painted orange) when it opened under its original owners in 1975.

But the shop -- with its thin lunch counter facing an unremarkable stretch of Richmond and a clump of tables to the side -- can have any shape it wants. The food is what matters, and it's pretty good.

To be honest, the first time we stopped by (to grab a to-go order of the special, a $7.39 bacon-burger-with-fries, and some $2.99 fried zucchini), we were disappointed. We'd recently stopped by Stanton's, and by comparison the beef patty was thin and tough, though the bun, lettuce and tomato were surprisingly fresh and flavorful. The zucchini disks were wide, with thick breading, but mediocre.

Our second stop was better.

We made sure to eat in and soak up the ambience (accented by a row of plastic sea creatures over the counter, made quirkier by the fact that few if any of them are on the menu). Stop by for a late lunch and you'll find the shop's staff gazing at the traffic and eating bowls of beef noodle soup (also not on the menu).

What is listed on the menu is the standard $3.49 Lucky Burger, which we ordered "all the way" with mayo, mustard, lettuce, pickles, onions, and tomatoes, rather than the limited lettuce-tomato we'd asked for the first time. We sometimes shun all the fixin's for the unobstructed meat experience, but it's better to go whole hog here. Just accept the cow isn't the star of the show.

We also ordered off the "House Specialties" list and tried the fried rice with pork. We're not convinced it was a great value at $5.99 for a standard plastic plate, but it was tasty. The pork was sparse but good. The peas and carrots actually tasted like what they are, rare in our experience. Maybe we were just in the mood, but it really hit the spot.

Don't mind the construction on Mandell if you go. The shop also delivers within a two-mile radius, provided your order is $10.

Way back in '80's it was called Lucky Barrel. I used to walk past it every day on the way to the bus stop. Only started eating there when it became Lucky Burger. I think they have a burger called the Farmer's Burger (hickory bbq sauce) that is pretty good if you are super-duper drunk....

Back in the late '80s Lucky Burger was owned by a Vietnamese family who had obviously managed a Sonic not long after they got off the boat. Killer stone rip-off of the classic Sonic "hickory" burger with liquid smoke and iceberg lettuce (nothing else.) If you are there, you should go across the street and check out the Meridth Garden at Castle Court and Mandell. One of the coolest community gardens in Houston, and a great place to eat your burger. Plus you can swipe some greens to garnish your sandwich.

Incidentally, Lucky Burger (barrel and all) was built by the father of my friend Stephan Fairfield, the CEO of Covenant Capital which is coolest faith-based economic empowerment non-profit around. Steve's dad is a pretty cool old dude, by the way.

Next time you stop by try out their blue-cheese burger as well as their eggrolls.

Thanks for the history, guys, we can county that mystery pretty much solved. And thanks for the tip, Jr., I wondered about that blue cheese burger....

Oh snap! Could this mean I don't have to go outside the loop to get my Chinese noodle fix!?!?! I live around the corner and will now be pestering them for some beef noodle soup. Thank you very much!

Unfortunately closed Sundays, which kills one day of hung-over delivery.

I'm not going there until they at least sweep and mop the dining room.

I'm not a clean freak or anything, but the few times I've visited, the dining room floor was always dirty with dust buildup.

If the dining room look like this, it can't say a lot for their cleanliness standards in the kitchen.

I used to live across the bridge in the Museum District and stopped by Lucky Burger fairly often. Each time I remember chugging lots of water to offset the salt rush I got. LB is OK, but only in a pinch.

I used to live like 2 blocks from it. I love it. They butter the bun or something. Good fried rice too.

Also, the sign looks like the characters from Aqua Teen Hungerforce. Not sure if it is or if it isn't, but there is a striking resemblance.

I love their veggie burger with cheese. It's not a soy patty, gardenburger patty, heck, it's not even a patty. It's thinly sliced onions, yellow and green squash, saute'd, then put on a bun with a slice of cheese! It's freakin' awesome.

Chris says:

The mushroom burger is also phenomenal. Lucky burger is one of those houston resturants that make your guests say "Where the fuck are you taking me" until they taste the food. I love doing that to my visiting guests. Similarly styled recommendations to shock and awe your guests are El Rancherito in Bellaire, Hobbit Cafe, and the Armadillo Palace on Kirby.

The mysteries of lucky burger indeed...

The barrel = probably an old A&W Root Beer stand

Candace Everett says:

Dave Boyle and his boys built Lucky Burger. He moved our family to Texas from Ontario Canada in 1963 to start up A&W Root Beer on Bellaire Blvd @ Stella Link (accross from Cellar Door). When he closed A&W he started Lucky Burger on Richmond. He designed the barrell (root beer). Lots and lots of memories. He opened up another Lucky Burger on Fondren @Richmond. Eventually he turned that Lucky Burger into Dave's Steak House. Again, lots and lots of memories. Dave opened up a few more restaurants in his "career"; Benny Boy Roast Beef, Derby Daves & Dave and Son's Hamburgers. Dave and his son Tom & Dave Jr. worked with him for many years. He eventually got out of the restaurant business and went into some other ventures (self-employed). After a very long hard fought battle with Alzheimer's Dave (a self-proclaimed "Legend in his Own Mind") passed away last year at the age of 84. I can't say who the Fairfield guy is but I do not remember him.

Janey Peterman says:

I just wanted to add to my sister, Candace, comments that at one point or another we all worked at all of the restaurants but the boys were instrumental; building from the ground up. Some of us filled in before we put in 5-6 hours of figure skating at the Galleria! And let us not forget Dad's favorite spot the "unwind" and shoot some pool...lovingly referred to as the "ORT" (Old Richmond Tavern). God Bless you Dad and may you RIP! BTW - fried rice and blue cheese were not on the menu back in the day. :)
