Back in July 2009, we ran down the list of Houston restaurants chosen for the somewhat ignominious honor of appearing on the Food Network's show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, starring the most obnoxious head full of peroxide since Pamela Anderson did duty on Baywatch. Some of the entries on the list were truly representative of Houston and fully embraced the "dive" portion of the title: Cafe Pita + and Lankford Grocery were two such restaurants. Others, meanwhile, were truly baffling.

That's where Bob's Taco Station comes in. We felt that there were far better representations of Mexican or Tex-Mex throughout the city than this "taco station" in Rosenberg, but not everyone agreed. While we clearly don't understand the allure of Bob's -- and maybe we never will -- its fans lept immediately to Bob's defense in the comments section: "Don't knock til you've tried Bob's Taco Station. I grew up down there, and the breakfast tacos at Bob's are unlike any I have ever had. It is a sensation in that area, and is no surprise that it has such a loyal following that it has found its way onto the Food Network."

Others were more emphatic: "Why the Bob's Taco bashing???? I realize that Bob's doesn't have a restrictive dress code or $250.00 winelists, but they have excellent authentic food. I have eaten there countless times and this family run business beats out the quality of the chain stores hands down. I feel that Ms. Shilcutt should actually go and eat there, then provide a copy of this article, with a handwritten apology / request for forgiveness attached to it. Bob's has dozens of Memorabilia items on their walls. Her confession will be a welcome addition to the decor."

While my handwritten apology for having an opinion won't be tacked to a bulletin board at Bob's any time soon, what is coming up soon for Bob's Taco Station is its episode -- finally -- of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Tune in tonight to the Food Network at 9 p.m. to find out just what makes Bob's so special.
