Cold and Flu Season Beware

As if we didn't have enough to worry about with the H1N1 virus, now we have to watch out for the common cold. And, let's face it, Houstonians are not meant for winter. Our magic cure - kimchi. It's good for colds and the occasional holiday hangover. You will just have to find another excuse to skip Christmas shopping this year.

Health magazine recently named kimchi one of the top five healthiest foods in the world. One serving has 80 percent of your recommended daily amount of Vitamin C, and it's even said to help digestion. Would you expect anything less from food that has been around for more than 3,000 years?

Kimchi does have a downside, though - the smell. As soon as you open the jar, your whole house will smell like something is rotting. No, you don't need to take out the trash. It's just the kimchi. It is fermented cabbage, after all. But, if you can get past the awful smell, kimchi actually tastes pretty good. It's crunchy, spicy, and sweet all in one.

At the first sign of a cold, we down a bowl of delicious and healthy kimchi stew. The recipe, after the jump.

Kimchi Stew

  • 4 cups of chicken stock

  • 2 cups of water

  • 1 TB of minced garlic

  • 3 green onions, chopped (no white)

  • 3 TB of hot and sour soup mix

  • 1 cup kimchi with juice

  • 1 pound of shrimp

  • black pepper

  • 1 TB of chili paste (optional)
  • Bring the first five ingredients up to a boil. Add black pepper and chili paste. Add kimchi and shrimp. Simmer until shrimp are pink and cooked through. Serve over rice.

    You can make your own kimchi at home, but I wouldn't. Just buy kimchi at your local grocery store or Asian market. We got ours at the Super H Market off Blalock.
