Eating Out on Thanksgiving Day? What's Open

Not everyone in the city celebrates Thanksgiving, and that should come as no surprise given our increasingly diverse tapestry of residents (something for which Eating Our Words is thankful). And not everyone who celebrates Thanksgiving does so with a big family dinner at home. For these folks, it can be frustrating to seek out a good meal on a day when so many restaurants are closed.

Below is a list of restaurants that will be open on Thanksgiving Day, as well as the menus that they're offering and contact information. Some of the restaurants are offering traditional menus, while some will have other dishes on display. Regardless, we strongly recommend RSVPing at most of these locations.

*17 at the Alden Hotel
Executive chef Chip Hight will feature a three-course prix-fixe menu for $45 per person. It includes your choice of roasted butternut squash soup or local green salad, turkey with all the fixings and your choice of pumpkin or pecan pie. Call 832-220-8800 for reservations.

Voice at the Hotel Icon
Executive chef Michael Kramer has prepared a three-course prix-fixe lunch for $55 per person. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. An excellent selection of dishes is available for all three courses, from duck ravioli or potato gnocchi with chanterelles for the first course to honey-lacquered duck breast or Gulf red snapper for the second course. Call 832-667-4470 for reservations.

Bernardo's at the Hotel Galvez
This popular brunch destination will feature a special Thanksgiving brunch with four seating times starting at 10:30 a.m. Executive chef Jerry Helminski's brunch will offer Thanksgiving favorites as well as a vast selection of fresh seafood, fall-inspired entrees and made-to-order omelettes. Brunch is $46 per person, $36 for seniors and $22 for children ages six to 12. Call 409-765-7721 for reservations.

Denny's
You won't have to RSVP at Denny's, and the meal certainly won't break the bank. The nationwide chain will have all of its locations open on Thanksgiving Day and will be offering lunch and dinner from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. with turkey and all the trimmings. Prices start at $8.99 and vary by location. Want something sweet to take home? You can also get whole pies to go: apple, spiced pumpkin and pecan. Pies range from $7.99 to $9.99.

Rudi Lechner's
For something less traditional, visit the popular German restaurant for a Thanksgiving buffet that features not only turkey and fixings, but also cabbage rolls, veal Zurich, goulash and apple strudel alongside honeybaked ham and roast beef. The buffet runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and costs $25 for adults and $8.95 for children 10 and under. Call 713-782-1180 for reservations.

Narin's Bombay Brasserie
For something even more adventurous, check out Narin's in the Galleria area. The restaurant is offering an amazing lunch buffet for $15.95 from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. It features Indian favorites like pakoras, saag paneer, aloo gobi, tandori chicken and gulab jamun alongside more traditional Thanksgiving fare. Call 713-622-2005 for reservations.

Maggiano's Little Italy
Also in the Galleria area, Maggiano's is offering an utterly enormous meal on Thanksgiving Day that features four courses, plus sides and pasta. Family-style is the way to go here, so bring your hungry cousins, grandparents and in-laws. Call 713-961-2700 for reservations and prices.

Bistro Provence
The French outpost in Memorial will be offering a lavish, three-course Provencal-inspired prix-fixe menu ranging from $25 to $29 per person. Appetizers are your choice of butternut squash bisque or salade Lyonnaise, with a choice of tarragon and olive oil-poached sea bass, New York strip with horseradish crust or roulade of turkey breast with sage and corn stuffing. The lunch is offered from noon to 2:30 p.m. Call 713-827-8008 for reservations.

Le Mistral
Not to be outdone, this breezy French restaurant just further west will also offer a Thanksgiving meal from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Chef David Denis has prepared a three-course prix fixe menu for $45 that includes your choice of Jerusalem artichoke soup or tarte tatin de chevre, butter-sage roasted turkey breast or osso bucco, and a trio of pumpkin desserts. Call 832-379-8322 for reservations.

Mockingbird Bistro
Chef Jose-Luis Vela's Thanksgiving menu is a little more expensive than some of the others around town, but the menu -- served from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. -- is worth the $59-per-person price ($25 for children). The three-course prix-fixe menu has goodies like charcuterie, Wood Duck Farms mesclun green salad, roasted Virginia ham with pork belly, pan-seared Chilean sea bass, roasted leg of lamb with chop and an assortment of delicious desserts. Call 713-533-0200 for reservations.

Chez Roux at La Toretta del Lago
At Lake Conroe, Chez Roux will be offering a plated dinner from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. for $65 per person. It includes your choice of souffle Suisseisse or seared scallops and squid, ballotine of turkey or roast loin of axis venison, and a trio of pumpkin desserts or a poached pear, with very civilized coffee and petit fours served afterwards. Call 936-448-3010 for reservations.
