Another Farmers' Market
There has been some flak about too many farmers' markets, but Houston needs a slow food movement and the markets are where it is going to start. Houston has another market sprouting roots Saturday mornings at Rice University from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the corner of Greenbriar and University. If you are coming down Greenbriar look for the white tents. ![]()
We sometimes feel that these markets are getting to be the same old, same old, but they are still a big deal to be sprouting up here in oil country. And this market has felt a little different than the others because it feels more like an industry meet-and-greet. Great chefs mingle with happy customers, and members of the local food community hang out and peruse the wares. We suggest you to become a part of it too.
Some of the local vendors are offering goat's milk, awesome almond croissants, local pig, meals to-go, and organic doggy treats. There's also an MS150 racing team led by a Plinio Sandalio of Textile that's holding a weekly bake sale to raise funds for the team to compete next year. Pictured above is a lemon tart with marshmallow meringue from a recent sale. Every week the team will offer new pastries to the crowd and ask only for donations. If you feel like donating a dollar, that's fine. This is a great way to try some of the most innovative and provocative desserts in the city at a reasonable price, all for a good cause.
