Jenny Wang and a bag of miracle berries

The Berry Fairy is back in town! After taking her popular Miracle Berry Parties on the road, Jenny Wang is back in Houston for another series of the popular "flavor tripping" events. The term "flavor tripping" refers to the manner in which your tastebuds are altered for up to an hour after ingesting the small, cranberry-shaped Synsepalum dulcificum, or miracle berry fruit. Foods taste entirely different under the influence of the miracle berry (which is also available in a stronger tablet form): raw lemons taste like sweet lemonade, Sour Patch Kids taste like Starburst candies, balsamic vinegar tastes like caramelized sugar, goat cheese tastes like cream cheese, bologna sandwiches taste like wedding cake and Guinness beer tastes like a chocolate milkshake.

The next Miracle Berry Party is at the newly-opened Ei8ht on Washington Avenue, on Wednesday, September 2, starting at 6 p.m. In addition to a buffet of strongly-flavored foods to try after eating the miracle berry, Tito's Vodka will also be sponsoring a "mad mixologist vodka bar" for guests to create their own crazy cocktails. Tickets are $30, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and sell out quickly, so head to The Berry Fairy's website and buy yours now.

If you're looking for something slightly more sedate (but only slightly), Guayaba Latin Grill is throwing a fifth anniversary party on Friday, September 4. The popular Willowbrook-area eatery specializes in Latin and Central American cuisine, and to celebrate its anniversary Guayaba is offering free empanadas to its guests from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday. There will also be fun games and prizes for the kids, so bring them along too.

No kids? How about pets? Hotel Derek is hosting yet another of its popular Derek Dog Day Out events today, August 27, from 6 to 9 p.m. Dog Day Out is a cocktail hour not just for professionals, but for their pooches too. Bring a leashed-up Fido or Fluffy (does anyone actually have dogs named Fido or Fluffy?) to the hotel tonight and enjoy a free cocktail and hors d'oeuvres for a $10 donation to Citizens for Animal Protection.

Lastly, there are a few tickets left for this Saturday's hot item at Anvil Bar & Refuge: a beer and cheese pairing with Kevin Floyd -- Anvil's resident beer expert -- and the Houston Dairymaids. The pairing takes place on August 29 starting at 4 p.m. Tickets are on sale at Anvil for $55, which includes five courses of beer and cheeses along with freshly-baked bread from Feast, so get to Anvil quickly before they're all sold out.
