The Texas blind salamander lives in a dark cave in San Marcos and doesn't see very well, hence the blues-guitarist moniker. It's also an endangered species. Blind Salamander Pale Ale from Rahr Brewery in Fort Worth is the first of a new series called "Rare Breed" beers. Each will be dedicated to a different Texas endangered species. When you buy the beer, Rahr makes a donation to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Foundation to help with the recovery of the critter.

Drinking Rahr's Blind Salamander Pale Ale is an unusually enjoyable act of charity. The bold-flavored brew balances some aromatic East Kent Golding hops with lovely, toasty, caramel malts. The beer has already won a gold medal at the US Open Beer Championships. Rahr Blind Salamander is available in Houston at Central Market and Spec's Warehouse.

Fort Worth microbrewery Rahr & Sons started brewing in 2004 in a warehouse south of downtown. The company currently produces a modest 5,000 barrels a year. Tours are available should you find yourself thirsty in Fort Worth on a Saturday afternoon.
