Openings and Closings

Was last week's announcement that Galleria-area Tex-Mex joint Maggie Rita's (2800 Sage) had closed perhaps a bit hasty? It seems so, since the owners contacted our friends at B4-U-Eat to let them know that they were indeed still open, but had been closed for a few weeks to repair damages after a fire. Call us crazy, but maybe answering your phone during those weeks to confirm that you're still open would be a good idea as a restaurant...

In other news, several restaurants opened throughout the city over the past week. The long-awaited Boudreaux's Cajun Kitchen (9774 Katy Freeway) at the new Bunker Hill development off I-10 is now serving up crawfish and red beans & rice to the west Houston masses. And further northwest at 1960 and Eldridge, Bullrito's (12719 FM 1960) opened up its second location. According to B4-U-Eat, the restaurant is owned by the same folks that run Gringo's, and has a concept similar to that of Bodega's in the Museum District: build-your-own burrito and grab a tasty margarita to wash it down.

In Galveston, Bistro LeCroy (2021 Strand St.) continued the island's redevelopment post-Ike as one in a long line of restaurants to reopen after the storm. The popular bistro along the Strand is housed in a gorgeous, wood-floored, high-ceilinged storefront along the main drag, which unfortunately sustained a lot of damage during the storm and required immense amounts of work to restore its period features.

Lastly, this weekend features the three-day long grand opening celebration of Block 7 Wine Company on Shepherd. The subject of this week's Cafe Bites, the wine and food emporium will feature live music on Friday and Saturday night from Robert Ellis, listenlisten and Runaway Sun, a Tasting Market on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. with free samples and a block party on Saturday evening starting at 5 p.m., with free food and discounted wine prices all night long.
