A Cafe Bites Nibble
Qidong Lin, who's from a small town in China, was first exposed to a moveable sushi bar during a visit to California. "I liked the concept very much," said Qidong. "It is relatively cheap and easy for customers to see what they're getting and how much they will pay." So he opened Sushi Choo Choo (12149 FM 1960 W, 281-955-2888). A conveyor belt moves past customers, displaying an enormous variety of sushi and tempura dishes, along with other dishes such as fried dumplings, edamame and seaweed salad. The food is served on plates with different-colored outer rings that represent different prices; with prices starting at just $1.50 for two pieces of sushi and going up to $4, it's an incredible deal. And since each dish is covered by a clear plastic lid, finicky eaters don't have to worry about germs that others may spread.
"Our chef is a great sushi chef," says Lin. "He trained in Japan for 10 years, and he specializes in sushi rolls like the Shaggy Dog and the Volcano Roll." Café Bites tested the concept and found it innovative, efficient and fun. On Lin's recommendation, both rolls mentioned were sampled. The Shaggy Dog consisted of shrimp tempura on a cucumber roll with kani, or imitation crabmeat. The Volcano Roll featured spicy crawfish on top of California rolls. Both were excellent.
