Dragonfruit at the Keauhou Farmer's Market

Going to the Farmer's Market on Saturday morning is one of those habits that's fun to engage in while you're on the road. And since I am staying in a condo with a kitchen this week in Kailua-Kona, it was great to buy some fresh local produce. The vegetables looked pretty much the same as home--there were some purple sweet potatoes and teeny weeny tomatoes that looked a little exotic. But the fruit was interplanetary. I saw lulo, lilikoi, breadfruit, starfruit, mangosteen, rambutan, Cuban bananas, apple bananas, and ice cream bananas. Dragonfruit was the weirdest--it tastes like a cross between rambutan and watermelon. (That helps a lot, right?) You eat the white fibrous fruit black seeds and all.

Pitanga Surinam cherries are sour and make great pies and pastries.
The Kona County Farm Bureau makes sure everything at the market is grown in Hawaii, and the quality is great. There's lots of baked goods--like lilikoi cookies, Suriman cherry bars and purple sweet potato cake. Tons of macadamia nut cookies too. And you can always get a fresh coconut if you want something to drink. I bought some Thai ginger, and some local grass-fed beef to make Hawaiian fajitas for dinner.
