Montrose Makes Way for Vinoteca Poscol

Vinoteca Poscol moves in.
The rumors flew when beloved Belgian restaurant Cafe Montrose closed late last year after Hurricane Ike.  Patrons hungry for their fix of moules, frites and Chimay were baffled when they pulled into the parking lot one day to find it "temporarily closed."  The confusion grew when the temporary closure stretched into days and weeks, eventually terminating in the blunt realization that Cafe Montrose was closed for good.

While most of the rumors surrounding the closure aren't worth repeating, one fact bears true: Cafe Montrose has made way for a new establishment along Westheimer.  Vinoteca Poscol has officially moved into the location, their brand new awning announcing that they'll be selling at least two things: wine and cured meats.

Inside Vinoteca Poscol: chairs waiting to be filled.
Marco Wiles, local celebrity chef and owner of the popular Da Marco and Dolce Vita, is behind this latest venture and the possible creation of a trifecta of amazing Italian restaurants within spitting distance of each other (Da Marco is across the street and Dolce Vita is a few blocks up at Whitney).  Word is that Vinoteca Poscol will be a wine and coffee bar cum Italian market, although its uncertain whether they'll be curing their own meat (hence the salumeria on the awning) or sourcing it.

Vinoteca Poscol is expected to open this March.

I guess it's time to move on from the denial stage.

I can't guess how many wonderfully enjoyable meals we've had at Cafe Montrose.

I think I'll never give up hope that maybe somewhere else a quirky little Belgian restaurant will appear and once again delicious mussels, fries, hearty stews and the like will be available once again.

I will miss Cafe Montrose. I did have a bad experience there several months ago with a waiter doing some unethical things with the bill i.e. stealing from us.

Cured meats in Montrose? Sweet. Now I won't have to carry rubbers with me. I just go the cafe and get cured meats.

'twould be bad news about Cafe Montose (loved the mussels, frites, and great beer on tap...not much else) if 'tweren't for the new occupants. don't know how the parking will work out though; folks might have to actually walk a block or so which is an outrage in the nation's energy capital. pls provide security to riv oaks whippets, x-rays, and lemon cremes!

As a matter of fact, there will be Italian wine, lots of cheese, house cured meats, as well as imported. There will also be vegetables, salads, risotto, baked pasta, some fried goodies, as well as all kinds of panini and bruschette. So count on this! I took a sneak peak at the menu while he was sleeping. I'm chef Marco's daughter. Expected to be opening some time in March!

Hi Dulce! You've done some great work so far, but I can make it very much worth your while, if you could forward me a copy of that menu, and any other ideas your father has been working on.

Hi Manfred!
How are things at Sovino? I don't think I can do that. Just wait until we open to come and steal if you need some new ideas :) You are so pathetic.

Sincerely,
Dulce.

I'm not sure why all the boo-hooing. The place sucked. Years ago it was good to hit-or-miss at best, but the last few years the food was down the toilet. Anyone who has either traveled, spent any time, or lived in Belgium knows that comparing the cuisine from Cafe Montrose to Belgium cuisine would be like comparing paint by numbers is to a Rubens.
The last time I had the misfortune of eating at Cafe Montrose I realized had badly this one time institution had become. The owners have themselves alone to blame. Face it, the atmosphere was dated, the food was mediocre at best (and that was on a stellar day) and the staff was as surly as a SABENA cabin crew on a return flight from Kinshasa to Brussels. Granted, I'd love to find a place with outstanding moules a la marinee et frites, or a satisfying croque monsieur, et al. but not Cafe Montrose, the place lost its lustre a spell ago! Wake up and smell the waffels fellow Houstonians, what once was is no longer. Cafe Montrose fell darwinian to hard times. Merde allors!

Cafe Montrose SUCKED! the waiters were SO RUDE! I hate waiters with an attitude!

Gary K says:

I agree with Brenda, as my earlier blog stated, the staff was about as surly as a SABENA cabin crew (when they were still flying) on a return flight from Kinshasa to Brussels. If Edith Piaf could only sing "Non, Je ne regrette rien"
the next line would had to have been" sauf la nourriture a cafe Montrose."
The place was just awful. In fact, the only people I knew who even half way liked it were people who probably hadn't ventured beyond Lake Charles on a weekend junket to l'Auberge du Lac Casino thinking it was a mighty fine French Resort on the Cote Azure. Please!
