Celebrating the Year of the Ox with Dragons

Categories: Robblog

IMG_3737.JPGIf you have never seen the dragon dancing performance that ushers in the Chinese New Year, make it a point to check it out. Bring your camera--and your kids. Sometimes the dancers perform outside, sometimes the dancers burst into restaurants with drums pounding and do a ritual good luck dance that includes taking tips from a restaurant owner. It's a fun spectacle.

Gigi's Asian Bistro & Dumpling Bar in the Galleria II is a great place to celebrate Lunar New Year. The restaurant is offering an all-you-can-eat dim sum lunch on Saturday the 24th and Sunday the 25th from 11 am to 2 pm followed by a live dragon dance performance both days by Lee's Golden Dragon Dance Troupe. A second dragon dance starts at 4:30 pm each day. Gigi's will serve a traditional Chinese New Year Feast after the late show. Call 713 629-8889 for details.

Monday, January 26, from 5 pm to 9 pm there will be Year of the Ox fireworks, more dragon dancing and a battle of the Drumline bands on at Thai Spice Asian Bistro at 13602 Bellaire Blvd. near Eldridge. There's a $15 Thai buffet, $10 for kids under 11 and free for kids under 6 and 10 percent of the net sales will go the Alief Elsik High School Band for the purchase of musical instruments. For more information call 281-797-1801.

More big Lunar New Year Celebrations will be going on January 31 at the Chinese Community Center and on February 7 at Viet Hoa shopping center on Beltway 8 at Beechnut.

Feel free to post more Chinese New Year info under Comments.
