Weird and Wild at Hubcap Grill

My first inclination was to go for the Triple Decker Burger at the Hubcap Grill, the little downtown burger shack that is the subject of this week’s Café Review. But the Triple Decker didn’t turn out to be my favorite--it was a little too long on the bread. Instead, I went wild for some of the weirder burgers on the menu. I also loved the sweet potato fries--they were incredibly crispy.

But eating at Houston’s Hubcap Grill really made me want to go to New Orleans. It seems that the name of the place was inspired by the Clover Grill, an old-fashioned burger joint on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, where they literally put a hubcap over the burgers as they fry them on the griddle to keep them juicy.

You can sneak a peek at the place in movie theaters come December. According to its Web site, The Clover Grill makes an appearance in the holiday season movie The Curious Case Of Benjamin Buttons, starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett. – Robb Walsh
