Oktoberfest in Fredericksburg

There were a lot of Texans trying to look German in lederhosen and peasant outfits at Oktoberfest in Fredericksburg. So when I saw two young women walk in the front gate in touristy cowboy hats, I did a double take. They were trying a little too hard to look Texan.

Then I heard Lisa Hamelow (left) and Regina Brunner (right) talking to each other in German. Turns out Lisa, who is from Berlin, and Regina, who is from Vienna, were working in the Washington D.C. area as au pairs and chose to use their travel month to explore Texas and the Southwest--and they were just in time for Oktoberfest!

The Texas-German festival also drew its share of accordion-wielding eccentrics, elderly polka fans and college-age foam rangers. The eclectic crowd was unified in their enthusiasm for beer and wurst. You can read more about Fredericksburg's Oktoberfest and Texas beer culture in this week's feature "Texas Wants Beer!" Here are a few more snapshots of the festivities. - Robb Walsh
