Robb Walsh's "Temples of Tex-Mex" gave us such a hankering for old-fashioned tamales, chili con carne and cheese enchiladas, we decided to make a map of the places he mentioned. Road trip, anyone? -- KP

I almost always eat breakfast at Mi Tierra in San Antonio--I think of it as a bakery, which is sort of a Tex-Mex genre--lIke Cisco's and Joe's Bakery in Austin. I get Mexican cookies for dessert.
I never understood the Mexico City combination plate at Molina's until I figured out that was the name of one of their early restaurants. The logo of the Mexico City Diner was a cartoon of Uncle Sam reaching across the border shaking hands with a guy in a sombrero.

My wife and I started eating at Matt's El Rancho when it was down by the river. His Tex Mex Plate (I don't remember the exact name) was wonderful. The food stayed great when he moved to the present location. Mr. and Mrs. Martinez were such wonderful people. The last time I was there, (about 2 years ago) something was different. I need to go back because I had too many great meals there to write Matt's off due to one experience. (Actually my order was great, 2 sons with me were not happy with there food. (they have both eaten there many times).
Now as to Joe T Garcias - I think this is the most overated outfit in the state. I ate there many times with some transplanted Yankees and Midwesterners who loved the place. I never did. I also was very disappointed with my one visit to Mi Tierra in San Antonio many years ago. The old Mi Tierra in Houston at Hogan and North Main (no relation) whould never have allowed what we were served out of his kitchen. But again, that was one visit. We may have hit a bad night.
I fondly remember the Old Mexico Inn on West Grey or Dallas. It kept me full many times when I had an empty stomach and very little money. The food was very good. Maybe it was because I was hungry, but I loved everything I ate there.
