Tex-Mex Temples: Combo Platters of Hopes and Dreams

Wed Jul 02, 2008 at 04:10:40 PM

Diana Kennedy has always trashed the “so-called Mexican restaurants” north of the border and the “overly large platters of mixed messes” they serve. Following her lead, food snobs on the East and West Coasts ridicule Tex-Mex--which they seem to think is the invention of a bunch of dumb rednecks who can’t cook Mexican food.

In fact, if you study old menus, you find that the “so-called Mexican restaurants” opened by Mexicans and Mexican-Americans in Texas combined authentic Mexican dishes, like tamales and enchiladas, with Texas creations, like chili con carne, to create an American regional cuisine.

Tex-Mex restaurants also offered Mexican-Americans rare opportunities for economic and social advancement. Take the case of Raul Molina, whose father worked on a railroad crew for the International & Great Northern line. Raul worked as a waiter for many years to save the money to own his own restaurant.

When they bought one, Raul Molina and his wife Mary lived on the second floor above the restaurant with their children. Every member of the family was employed by the business. And when they expanded, there was always a family member in charge of each new location.

In their later years, Raul and Mary Molina became prominent members of Houston society and generous donors to charities. They were very active in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. None of which makes Molina’s combo platters taste any better.

Hey--some people prefer authentic Mexican food to Tex-Mex, some people like risotto better than spaghetti and meatballs--to each his own. But maybe you should think twice before you trash somebody’s culture based on your taste in tacos. – Robb Walsh

I've found TexMex quite a different flavor and enjoyable, I love the background you provide.

AMEN!! I love genuine Mexican food - but I also love Tex-Mex. I love New Mexican style Mexican food as well. That is no different than loving several styles of Chinese food, including many popular dishes that were created here in the States. I like the spicy dishes but also enjoy Moo Goo Gai Pan. Bar-B-Que is often quite different in the same part of the state, much more varied statewide, and even more varied across the country. Most of it is good, if it is real pit BBQ. As to the entire Mexican Food Category, my favorites are: Taqueria Laredo on Washington for tacos, Veracruz on Irvington for Steak la Mexican & Chili Relinos, and El Gallo on Gessner for that special chicken dish with a whole grilled breast covered with queso and pico. (This dish was created by the founder and I think it is the best chicken dish served anywhere). I love the green enchaladas served at Santa Fe Flats. The very best Tex-Mex ever in Houston was Mi Tierra on North Main at Hogan. It was a small, clean, hole-in-the-wall that few knew existed. EVERYONE I ever took there raved about the food. People I took there 30 years ago still rave about the food! The owner retired. I really miss that place.

Wow, thanks Ralph!
I've never been to Veracruz, Santa Fe Flats, or El Gallo on Gessner--now I have something to look forward to.

What do you think of Loma Linda?

I like the Laredo Taqueria on Patton better than than one on Washington.

Robb: It has been way too many years since I have eaten at Loma Linda. At least I think it was Loma Linda that used to be on Griggs Road in the early sixties. It was really good Tex-Mex but it was always hard to get a table because of the business they did. I only had thirty minutes for lunch. I have never tried the Laredo Taquera on Patton but plan to now. I was in Austin yesterday and three of us ate ate lunch at Matts - It was great! I used to eat at Matts when it was on the river.
