Best Burger on Bingle

The Cowboy Burger at JR’s Bar-B-Que, 6810 Bingle, is a free-form half-pounder topped with bacon, Monterrey Jack, and mushrooms on Texas toast. At $7.50 it’s the top of the line at JR’s Bar-B-Que, which advertises the “Best Burgers on Bingle.” (If you know of a better burger on Bingle, please let us know.)
While I was attempting to photograph the sandwich, the restaurant’s manager, a young man with a blond crewcut, came outside and confronted me. “Can I ask what you’re doing?” he asked angrily.

“Taking a picture of my hamburger,” I replied. Perhaps he thought that I was engaged in some sort of industrial espionage, a digital Hamburglar, as it were, because he took out a camera of his own and took a photo of my automobile’s license plate. I have no doubt he reported me to the police. I put my burger in the car and beat a hasty retreat before things got any testier.
I highly recommend the Cowboy Burger at JR’s Bar-B-Que, but I suggest you refrain from photographing it. – Robb Walsh

I lived near Bingle for most of my life, and never even noticed this restaurant. I don't understand why the manager overreacted to such a degree. My "beef" is as follows:
1) Nobody is doing anything groundbreaking with hamburgers to the point of having espionage-worthy trade secrets. Sure, someone could fashion a Kobe beef burger fried in truffle oil and the tears of a unicorn, served in a napkin made from the Shroud of Turin...but chances are, not on Bingle. Something that snarky would more than likely pop on on Washington, and have a name like ".bouef." or something.
2) I would think this restaurant could use any and all the press it could get. As mentioned previously, I lived for over a quarter of a century less than a mile from it, and never even knew about it.
That being said, the burger looks outstanding. Gotta love bacon.
Posted On: Thursday, Jul. 31 2008 @ 9:45AMI grew up a stone's throw from this place. I am kinda surprised that it is still around, it has been there at least twenty years. That burger does look pretty awesome, thanks Mr. Walsh for taking the abuse.
I am sure that if the camera policeman knew who Mr. Walsh was, he would have been more accomodating. The only reason I can come up with why this guy went Grape-Ape on Mr. Walsh is that he was probably the owner, this area of town has gone a little down hill and he just wanted to look out for his place. That or maybe Mr. Walsh looks real rough when out and about town and should think about maybe shaving every now and again and wearing something more high class than cut off jean shorts and a wife beater.
Posted On: Thursday, Jul. 31 2008 @ 10:35AMwho knew your job was so dangerous? (i mean besides all the calories and cholesterol you take for the team repeatedly for the sake of reporting on your burger blog.)
i just wanted to say "thank you." we appreciate it, we really do.
Posted On: Thursday, Jul. 31 2008 @ 12:42PMI would've taken a picture of him and then his license plate ]:o}
Posted On: Thursday, Jul. 31 2008 @ 12:57PMMaybe the manager used to work for Jay at the New York Bagel Shop?
I burgers are pretty good at JR's but the family who owns it is pretty anger at something. At least it's been at themselves and not the customers until now. Just a bunch of anger, bitter, mad bunch of JR workers. The burger Nazi's!
Posted On: Sunday, Aug. 3 2008 @ 7:35AMNo real offense aimed at the fine folks of JR's, but do they really think they have some kind of proprietary claim on a burger that looks thrown together? I concur that the sloppiest is usually the tastiest but I don't know that any burger is worth going postal on someone.
If you'd snapped pix of the kitchen and/or cooking process then I could understand the nastiness- he'd have every right to be all over yer arse.

Posted On: Thursday, Aug. 14 2008 @ 11:06AMI've eaten pretty much everything on the menu and have enjoyed every bite! Not only do they have the best burgers on Bingle, they have the best potato salad (white), the best chef's salad (turkey), the best brisket and suasge and catfish and baked potatos and...well you get the messege. I'm just sad they no longer have live blues bands on Sunday anymore. :(
If you've not been there yet, Try it, you'll like it!

I'm going to stop by JR's and make a point to give the young man with a blond crewcut manager something worthy to whine about. What a wuss...
Posted On: Thursday, Aug. 14 2008 @ 12:46PMWell Mr. Walsh, I was told that you were photographing much more than just a burger that you mangled with your own hands, does a blond waitress ring a bell? And being from this area, i would have made sure i got your liscense plate too, seeing as MY CAR has been broken into multiple times around this location. Dont be such a sissy, and your right, their burgers are to die for!!
Posted On: Thursday, Aug. 14 2008 @ 9:29PMJR's is the best burger joint in town, if you say it's not then you are truly disillusioned. I'm pretty sure Nathan wasn't concerned about someone taking a picture of his burger, but of someone snapping pictures of his waitresses. JR'S ROCKS!!
Posted On: Friday, Aug. 15 2008 @ 7:19AMI have eaten at J.R.'s many many times. Food is good, as well as the service. As far as the manager (Nathan), he was just taking precautions... These days you never know. I think he did the right thing, just in case... J.R.'s is always a top pick of mine when I am on that side of town!
Posted On: Friday, Aug. 15 2008 @ 8:24AMthis old man has lived in the area for ever, and JR's not only the best BURGER, but hands down the best FOOD on Bingle. "Try the Cobbler!
Posted On: Friday, Aug. 15 2008 @ 10:06AMWhere else can you get down home southern style cooking? Thanks for the burger tip, I haven't tried that one. It may not be the best side of town but damn the food hits the spot everytime! Little hole in the walls always rock out big restaurant chains.
Posted On: Friday, Aug. 15 2008 @ 11:12AMI've been going to JR's for years for there excelant brisket sandwitches, lean and tender w/a great BBQ sauce. So I will definatly try the coyboy burger!
Posted On: Sunday, Aug. 17 2008 @ 10:54AMHello to all my family in Houston.....:)From Albuquerque!!!!! just wanted to let the public know we have a family ran business and its all the way here in new mexico too...JR'S BBQ!!!!!and are very proud of decades of great food!!!!!!!!!! With Luv!!!! The Johnsons!!!!!!!
Posted On: Sunday, Aug. 17 2008 @ 10:01PMOK, I work right down the street from JR's. Area of town can be colorful - if you know what I mean and I am sure the owner was just be cautious. Nothing personal Mr. Walsh.
These burgers really are the BEST burgers on Bingle - just GREAT! Have eaten here many times and the company I work for has used their catering services often. Their BQ is tasty too and their peach cobbler to die for.
Glad to see a write up about this place - it's worth the praise!

Posted On: Monday, Sep. 1 2008 @ 12:09AMTwenty seven years we have served this neighborhood and have enjoyed every moment. However, the place has been up for sale for a million. Looks like there is a buyer. I will miss everyone like my own family. Family places will soon be taken by corporate America. Yours Truely, BK
