$13 at Baba Yega on Grant

Categories: $13

What $13 gets you: I ordered the Fantasy sandwich (and made the mistake of saying, “I’ll have your Fantasy, please,” when I ordered – giggles all around). Normally, the Fantasy runs $8.95, but I subbed out fresh fruit for the potato salad for a dollar more. Add in my iced tea for $1.50, taxes and tip, and I make it out the door for $13 exactly.

The Fantasy is baked ham and melted provolone cheese, topped with and avocado slices, all on a baguette. Simple, yet yummy. And filling.

My friend ordered the grilled rainbow trout ($12.95), a beautiful filet which came with rice and grilled veggies. He pronounced it “worth a return trip.”

The service was friendly, and all our substitutions were correct (my friend wanted grilled Julienne veggies instead of the thick slices the trout usually comes with).

Recommended: Yes. And not just because of the good food. Baba Yega is in the heart of Montrose and is Gaysville Central. It’s also one of the few restaurants in Houston where blue-haired old ladies and bald-headed bikers happily co-exist. I’m sure there is the occasional tourist who wants to ogle the GLBT crowd, but that’s very rare. Instead Baba Yega is casual and comfortable for everyone.

Bonus point: There is a great breakfast buffet on both Saturday and Sunday mornings. — Olivia Flores Alvarez
