Free Waffle Fries

Wed Jun 27, 2007 at 03:24:36 PM
Yep. And plenty more, so long as you're one of the first 100 people in line at 6:00 a.m. tomorrow for the grand opening of the new Chick-fil-A at 8609 Westheimer.

"A one-year supply of free Chick-fil-A® Combo Meals (52 coupons) will be awarded to each of the first 100 adults, age 18 and older with identification," says the press release. "The line can begin forming up to 24 hours prior to the opening."

Personally, we think you should show up in a chicken suit and start clucking about that time you caught salmonella in Tijuana. That'll show those damn cows what's up. -- Keith Plocek

This week in Café: La Fiesta Mexican Restaurant

Tue Jun 26, 2007 at 01:34:57 PM

After a day of errands and chores, our group was sweaty and hungry. We were clad in dirty shorts, flip-flops and the like, and we had an unruly infant in tow. Our destination was a Mexican restaurant called Cantina Laredo at Wilcrest and Westheimer.

While we were looking for a space in the crowded parking lot the restaurant shares with Whole Foods, a couple walked by on the way to Cantina Laredo's front door. She was an attractive blonde in tight jeans, and he was wearing a natty silk shirt. There was an awkward silence as we watched them walk by the car. Then, to everyone's relief, I suggested that we go to a different restaurant.

Endless CFS

Mon Jun 25, 2007 at 09:31:17 AM

My e-mail box is filling up fast. “Robb, have you tried the CFS at the Old West in Denton? It is probably the best one I have ever eaten,” wrote David Luna. Burleigh Nevills wrote, “Beef N bun restaurant on West Fuqua wasn't on your list....hmmm.” And Walter Hammock thoughtfully observed, “I realize you can't hit them all but you missed a real gem in Texas Tradition in Katy, the real deal on CFS.”

The CFS at Neinast in Somerville

Yes, I probably missed some great ones. And to tell you the truth, I also ate some great ones that I didn’t get around to writing about.

Take the wonderful little CFS I ate at Neinast, “The Windmill Restaurant,” in Somerville, for instance. It had a Southern style crust and excellent cream gravy. But since it was the second best CFS in Somerville, it didn’t make my Lovable 25.

Which is really a shame since college students from a farm college in that part of the state have sworn allegiance to either the Neinast or Country Inn CFS for generations.

But when it comes to Texas chicken-fried steaks, Walter is right, “You can’t hit them all.” – Robb Walsh

We Heart CFS

Fri Jun 22, 2007 at 04:52:20 PM

Chicken fried steak lovers, this must be your week. And it isn’t just because the current Press features 25 choice locations for CFS.

Daniel Kramer
Nope, as an added bonus, we learn from the New York Times today that Houston’s own Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital boasts one of the nation’s lowest mortality rates for patients treated for heart attacks or heart failure.

The federal government analyzed some 5,000 hospitals. Four Texas hospitals – two in Fort Worth, one in Abilene and another in Texarkana – are listed among the hospitals where heart patients are most likely to die.

Folks in those cities might consider steering clear of our list. But Houstonians can dig in without remorse. So go on and get your CFS fix. And live! – Todd Spivak

Strip Steak

Sure, food is great, but sex is what really gets our readers’ attention.

Or at least that’s what the two comments on Robb Walsh’s latest review would lead us to believe:
