The New Captain America Trailer Wins Super Bowl Sunday
Sunday was a night of lopsided victories. On the field the Seahawks completely clowned the Broncos. At halftime Bruno Mars outshined the Red Hot Chili Peppers. And in the battle of the Super Bowl movie trailers, Captain America demolished the competition.
It wasn't even fair really. The only other trailer that really stood out was that new Transformers trailer because it features a robot wielding a sword while riding a dinosaur robot, and even then it's hard to get too excited because the Transformers franchise exists to print money and make bad cinema.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier looks like it's moving away from the pulpy adventure spirit of the first film and in to the big budget action of The Avengers, which is a good thing. You can get away with that retro feel when your movie is set during WW2, but trying that in modern times is the type of experimentation Marvel doesn't need; save the crazy stuff for Guardians of the Galaxy since that's what it's there for.
There's a lot to love in the glimpse we get of the new flick. The action scenes look bigger, the stakes look larger, and the cast is basically The Avengers Lite. Hugo Weaving's Red Skull is slightly missed; his acting was great but his look never quite worked. Swapping him out for Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, and Robert Redford seems like a pretty fair trade.
(Isn't it wild that guys like Redford and Michael Douglas (via Ant-Man) are in superhero movies?)
Now that we've gotten a better look at the flick, speculation will start to ramp up about how this film fits in to the greater cinema universe that Marvel is building and what the post-credits scene will feature. With Avengers: Age of Ultron only 15 months away it'll be interesting to see how things unfold between Captain America, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Agents of Shield.
Then the cycle begins all over again and the build to Avengers Part 3 starts.
And all of that before the still untitled Batman/Superman movie hits theaters.
