I occasionally feel bad for Peter Jackson. Sure he got to bring three of the most beloved books in fiction to life while making a ton of money and winning a boat load of awards in the process, but look at him now. After the heavily flawed King Kong and the mostly ignored The Lovely Bones, he's back to the world of Middle Earth, only this time it doesn't seem like anyone cares.

That was my theory anyway, until I realized that the first movie in The Hobbit Trilogy made north of a billion dollars and is the 15th highest grossing film of all time. Call me a sell out, but I'll take being known as "that guy who only directed Middle Earth movies" if it means making that much cash.

Still, it does seem weird that the promotion for The Hobbit films has been understated. The Lord of the Rings films felt like events. The Hobbit just felt like another holiday blockbuster, albeit one with singing dwarves.

Which leads us to the new trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug which looks suitably epic and pretty damn confusing at the same time.

For a movie called The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, it would be nice to see more of a) the hobbit in question and b) the desolation of Smaug. It's been a minute since I've read the book, but for some reason I don't remember a subplot with a lovesick elf. Also, maybe my memory betrays me, but I seem to recall the book being a lot more lighthearted. It feels like there's way too much heavy drama going on in this two-and-a-half minute trailer.

But maybe they're just saving the singing dwarf parts for the paying audiences.

Still, I suppose it will be nice to see Sherlock and Watson reunited again before Sherlock Season 3, even if one of them is a dragon and the other is a hobbit. Fingers crossed this is a better sequel than the last one Benedict Cumberbatch was in.
