White Shoes for You: Happy Memorial Day!
Some questions are impossible to answer: Whether God exists, what exactly happened when the universe was created and what happens when we die. Mysteries! There are other Important Questions that plague us on a day-to-day basis, and though less profound, they certainly inspire deep thoughts nonetheless. This week, the debate has raged on surrounding one question: If you wear white shoes before Memorial Day (and after Labor Day), do you go to hell?
Your feet are free to wear white -- Happy Memorial Day!
A couple of years ago, I took to the Internet to find out if this Old Standard of a fashion rule still applied. And as with most questions, the Internet answered succinctly: Yes, and no, and also maybe, but mostly it's up to you, so whatever. In the spirit of that kind of definitive etiquette guidance -- and since it's Memorial Day Weekend anyway, so seriously, who cares? -- here are a few of the coolest white shoes in which to hit the streets now that summer has arrived.
Obviously J. Crew has to represent here, seeing as how they are redefining preppy fashion on a daily basis. (Yes, daily--do you have any idea how many e-mails they send? Christ.) The Cece Leather Ballet Flat ($138) comes in six colors including "mineral grey" which my geologist husband assures me is "white." The soft white shade is very fresh and summery, and if you're in the market for two pair the bright yellow ("Dazzling Sun") is equally gorgeous.

KORS by Michael Kors (Zappos)
For all the sandal lovers who hate a thong between their front toes, this KORS by Michael Kors sandal is perfect. Also, it's adorable and ALSO, it's on sale for $132 (from $250). A zipper up the back of the heel doubles as a cool detail, and the wide toe strap and ankle cuff combo are sleek and graphic.
Prada Patent Leather Wedge Sandal (DSW)
Sure, the $399.95 price tag takes my breath away, but it's Prada! Patent! Leather! The black and white graphic design on the heel looks so chic, and won't show dirt as quickly as an all-white sole. Also, did I say PRADA PATENT LEATHER?
Clarks Dunbar Racer Boat Shoe
Out-prepping J. Crew, Clarks has a very cool, very white slip-on leather boat shoe with tan trim that looks super luxe; at $79.99 it's a fraction of the cost of the versions spotted in Galleria windows last weekend. Pair with walking shorts and a gingham checked shirt with rolled sleeves, or wear with rolled up boyfriend jeans and a men's tank with a pair of long, knotted pearls.
Sergio Rossie Mermaid Bootie, Nordstrom
Nordstrom has compiled an entire shop of bridal shoes where you can look for the perfect pair of white shoes for your wedding. Not limited to white, the gallery includes metallics, plus plenty of bright colors for brides who find white shoes a little boring and/or impractical. The metallic options are probably the most eye-catching, flattering, and versatile--you'll wear them long after your wedding, which you can't always say about a white evening shoe--there are some interesting options in white, including:
• Blue by Betsey Johnson "Bells" Sandal ($99.25): Definitely bridal, but the Tiffany blue heel and the crystal-covered heel makes it edgy enough to wear with evening looks, like a pair of slim, white pants.
• Badgley Mischka "Naomi" Wedge Sandal ($235): A slim, delicate take on wedge sandals with a big, bling-y toe detail. Perfect for tropical evening vacations, or the closest facsimile; pair with flowing maxi-dresses in bright hues.
• Sergio Rossi "Mermaid" Bootie: If you can afford this $1,760 cage bootie, please adopt me. I wear a size 5.5 US.
