Jersey Boys: Rev Up Your Falsetto and Walk Like a Man

Colby Foytik grew up in Southern California in the '70s and '80s. "There's absolutely nothing Italian or Jersey about me," he says laughing. But that hasn't stopped him from playing Tommy DeVito in the Tony®-, Grammy®- and Olivier Award-winning Best Musical Jersey Boys, about The Four Seasons -- Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi.
Before joining the national tour production 15 months ago that Gexa Energy Broadway is bringing to Houston this month, Foytik played another character in the show in Las Vegas while he understudied the DeVito role.
In keeping with the Las Vegas casino's desire to get people out and gambling as soon as possible, Foytik says the show there was held to 90 minutes -- the touring one runs about 12 minutes longer.
The show is known for its songs and why not, with ones such as: "Walk Like a Man," "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Sherry," "December 1963 (Oh What a Night)," "My Eyes Adored You," "Stay" and "Can't Take My Eyes Off You."
But it's not just the music that has staying power, according to Foytik. "It is not a jukebox musical. You can take all the music away and still have a brilliant play. This story really took a risk -- warts and all -- and really let people know what it was like. Yes, it is a musical, but we get to delve into these real human beings."
Foytik says he loves playing the DeVito character. "It is incredibly different from me as a person. Tommy is just fearless and brash and says whatever he wants. That's not necessarily me or people I know. It's a lot of fun to go out there and cut loose every night."
