Elf - another alternative for the upcoming Christmas season
Today, Theatre Under the Stars is announcing its main stage Hobby Center productions for the next season, one that depends heavily on the tried-and-true and Hollywood-to-stage offerings. And a little bit of edge.

Starting off in style with Priscilla Queen of the Desert The Musical, the official announcement refers to "a trio of friends on a road trip of a lifetime." Well, yes, but it should also be noted that the trio's members are two drag queens and a transsexual.

Elf - The Musical, The Wizard of Oz, Evita and Disney's The Little Mermaid are more mainstream selections, while the late January offering of We Will Rock You offers lovers of Queen a happy sing-along night.

Still not announced is the summer outdoor show at Miller's Theatre and the special set of four plays TUTS has planned for the smaller Zilker theater where TUTS Artistic Director Bruce Lumpkin promises "edgier material, newer works, brand new works" in his ongoing effort to attract younger theater audiences as well as the ones TUTS already has. So we'll have to wait for that announcement later in the season.

Clap your hands, Evita is back
Here's the 2013-14 main stage lineup for TUTS:

Priscilla Queen of the Desert The Musical
September 29 - October 12, 2013

Three friends go on a road trip and no it's not an old Bob Hope/Bing Crosby movie. Boarding a bus in the hinterlands of Australia, the group in Priscilla Queen of the Desert The Musical finds "love and friendship" and costumes, lots of costumes. Songs include: "It's Raining Men," Finally," and "I Will Survive."

Elf - The Musical
December 6 - 19, 2013

It's another Hollywood to Broadway musical, this time the Houston premiere of Elf - The Musical, the story of Buddy "who mistakenly crawls into Santa's bag of gifts and is transported back to the North Pole." Eventually, he discovers he's human and makes a trip to New York City to help that (benighted) land figure out what Christmas is all about. If you're tired of all the iterations of A Christmas Carol, this could be a good alternative.

We Will Rock You
January 22 - February 4, 2014

If you love the Queen, this show is for you. The songs are all here: "Another One Bites The Dust," "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," "We Are The Champions," "Bohemian Rhapsody" and, "We Will Rock You." Join the 15 million people who've seen We Will Rock You - a gift from London's West End.

The Wizard of Oz
March 4 - 16, 2014

The Wicked Witch of the West, Dorothy, Toto, Scarecrow, Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion. And don't forget the winged monkeys. Wait, wait, yes you've seen The Wizard of Oz but this is Andrew Lloyd Webber's new production of the classic tale. In addition to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," Tim Rice and Webber have tacked on some new songs. And some new twists, Lumpkin promises.

Evita
May 6 - 18, 2014

And Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber are back with Evita, the Tony Award-winning musical about a Eva Person, a manipulative woman who used her power for good and greed as she became the First Lady of Argentina. And don't forget the songs: 'Don't Cry for Me Argentina," "Another Suitcase in Another Hall," and "High Flying, Adored."

Disney's The Little Mermaid
June 13 - 26, 2014

Ariel has daddy issues and wants to get out from under water. If you've been a parent of a young child in the last 20 years or so, you've seen the animated film a jillion times. Disney's The Little Mermaid comes with snappy songs (including the Academy Award-winner "Under the Sea") , a crab named Sebastian, an evil sea witch and a handsome love interest named Prince Eric.
