Free for All: Wade Wilson's New Show, Prize Poets and the Chevron Houston Marathon

There's an opening reception for the new show at the Wade Wilson Gallery on Friday. The "The Illusion of the Precise" features work by a trio of artist, Robert Ryman, Mark Williams and Todd Williamson. The show takes its title from the idea that while at first glance the works seem to be perfect and precise, closer inspection shows them to have subtleties and imperfections. These artists hold that in all things, precision is only an illusion. Ryman is considered by many to be one of the most significant minimalist artists of the 20th century. Both Williams and Williamson enjoy similar reputations.

Opening reception on Friday is at 6 p.m. Regular viewing hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays to Saturdays. Through February 2. Wade Wilson Gallery, 4411 Montrose. For information, visit the gallery's website or call 713-521-2977.

On Saturday, our friends over at Public Poetry have two special guests for their Prize Poets reading, Fady Joudah and Katherine Larson. Both are winners of the prestigious Yale Prize for Younger Poets (Joudah's The Earth in the Attic won in 2007, and Larson's Radial Symmetry in 2011). The two have something else in common: They are both scientists. Joudah is a practicing physician of internal medicine, often working with Doctors Without Borders. Larson is a molecular biologist and field ecologist.

Presented by Public Poetry and Houston Public Library, Prize Poets starts at 2 p.m. at the Central Library, 500 McKinney. For information, visit the Public Poetry website or call 281-687-5270 or visit www.publicpoetry.net.

The 2013 Chevron Houston Marathon and Aramco Houston Half Marathon (& 2013 ABB 5K) is set for both Saturday and Sunday, with different events scheduled for each day. On Saturday, it's the ABB 5K and related fun. On Sunday, it's the marathon and half-marathon. Two Ethiopians took home top honors (and new course records) during last year's Marathon, Tariku Jufar (2:06:51) and Alemitu Abera (2:23:14). Those times might be challenged during this year when some of the world's best marathoners hit the downtown Houston streets. The single-loop marathon has been called the "fastest winter marathon" and the "second fastest marathon overall" by the Ultimate Guide to Marathons. A side note for all the runners out there: Registration is sold out for the event, so if you're not one of the 13,000 runners who are already signed up, you can stop training now.

The races start at 7 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. George R. Brown Convention Center, 1001 Avenida de las Americas. For information, visit the marathon's website or call 713-957-3453. Free.
