The Many Shades of Who Should Play Christian Grey

As the end of the book signings come closer...the pressure is on in Hollywood to turn Fifty Shades of Grey into a movie...before the steam runs out. Since the blow up of the novel there have been numerous blogs and articles on who should be cast to play women's favorite secret desire...the charismatic Christian Grey.

Almost every actor in Hollywood has been asked whether he would be interested in tackling the role of Christian Grey and blogs have continued to have their favorites. All sorts of names have been thrown out there. Some that make some sense...Ryan Gosling, Max Irons, Chris Hemsworth...and some that make no sense whatsoever...Alex Skarsgard, Channing Tatum...Jake Gyllenhaal...really?! Even EL James herself has said she has no idea who will be playing Christian Grey as she only has some say as to whom the studios will cast. So lets see whom we've come up with shall we.

A top web pick and my personal pick is the often misunderstood and supposed bad boy: British hunk Alex Pettyfer. Why is he number one on my list...well the most obvious answer. No...not because he played a stripper cowboy in Magic Mike. Real answer-> He seems to fit the profile best. He's blonde, beautiful, well spoken, charismatic, with a sexy smile and cocky yet appealing attitude. Is this not Christian Grey? Only problem I see is that he is only 22, but he could easily pass for 27 and although Pettyfer seems to be a sweetheart in the real world he has certainly shown that he can play that kind of bad boy we love to hate on screen.

Next that seems to be one of the most popular on the web is: Ian Somerhalder...yes Damon himself. Mr. Vampire Diaries. Now this one I don't understand. Yes he is cute...if you like that Ken doll, cookie cutter kind of guy. No offense, but I don't think Damon...I mean Somerhalder is anything like Christian Grey. First off, not blonde. Well spoken? Let's not go there shall we. I don't mean to be hard on Somerhalder. He seems like a nice enough guy in real life with all of his humanitarian work, but as far as playing Christian Grey. I don't see it. I think this one was picked by a bunch of hard-core Vampire Diaries fans. Plus he is in his mid-thirties now...and I don't think he could pass for someone that was 27...well maybe. Either way don't think he's ready to play Christian Grey. But speaking of the Vampire Diaries....

That comes to my next pick: Joseph Morgan. Like with Pettyfer, Morgan almost completely fits the profile of Christian Grey. Blonde, beautiful, although maybe not as built as Christian Grey is supposed to be...another plus for Pettyfer. He is well spoken or at least can play some one that is. Maybe it's the British thing. Christian Grey is not supposed to be British, but the way that author James (who is British herself) wrote him, he sure sounds like he would be. Besides, Morgan already plays that kind of cocky yet appealing character on Vampire Diaries...everyone's favorite baddie vamper, Klaus. Again, the only problem here is the age difference. He is not 27, but I don't think Hollywood has ever got that right. I mean most of the characters on Vampire Diaries are supposed to be in high school...right??

Another web top pick that seems to be on every other list is Henry Cavill. Cavill has only recently made it big after appearing in last year's Immortals (with Joseph Morgan)...and will probably see more success after his upcoming role as superman in next year's Man of Steel. Now not going to lie, Henry Cavill is a good-looking guy.... VERY good-looking guy...and British. But again, not blonde....maybe too big...not really boyish the way that Christian Grey is described. More THOR-ish/HE-MAN-ish. He is only 28 so he is the closest to the character's age, but like the saying goes..."Age is relative". Cavill looks older than he is. And although he appears well spoken, incredibly sexy and somewhat charismatic I don't think he is the right fit for Christian Grey.

Another popular pick...White Collar's Matt Bomer. I love this guy. Adorable. Sweet...but Christian Grey. I don't know. Probably not. And didn't he ACTUALLY play a Ken doll in Magic Mike? Love him. Love him, but no to Christian Grey.

Last, but not least...and the most favored on the web...Edward Cullen...also known as Robert Pattinson. Now this is where the heated debate will start. First, I'm guessing that all of the...what are they called? Twi-hards...yes. They want R-Paz to play Christian Grey. Yes Pattinson is adorable, but he doesn't seem tough enough to play Grey. He has that boyish look yes, but pulling off a cocky confidence that women seem to find so irresistible in Grey, I don't know if he could pull it off. He's almost the exact age yes, but still I'm not seeing him ordering Ms. Steele around and the audience buying it. A little too wimpy... and glittery. He was born to play Cullen, but for Grey we need someone stronger. I know a lot of people will go after me for that one, but that is why we have these discussions.

So in the end we all have our own personal pick for Christian Grey...mine Alex Pettyfer...with Joseph Morgan in the running. Still we will have to wait and see whom Hollywood decides is the right shade of gray to play Christian Grey.

Christian has dark copper colored hair, not blonde. He also is not "boyish" either so I really think you should re-read the material. He's tall, strong and slim yet in ridiculous shape. Ever see Henry Cavill in Immortals? That's it. Slim and ripped! I agree that Matt and Ian shouldn't play the role though. The similar reason being that they're in their mid-30s already and will be a decade older than Christian by the third movie. I don't see Ian as Christian at all though and I agree with you that the reason he's so popular for the part is because he tapped into his VD fan-base and started a campaign to get him cast. DESPERATE MUCH? Such a turn off. I think he's unattractive anyway and looks like a creeper. Matt being gay just kills the fantasy for me also, and I'm reading that more and more these days from other women too. Henry Cavill is the one! He has incredible Christian-like qualities and is the perfect age.

First of all Christian Grey is NOT blonde. did you read the books? WTH...Christian Grey is dark and brooding with grey eyes Hello Ian Somerhalder that's why he is so popular he fits this character they and thru. Get your facts straight before writing an article on such a popular novel and upcoming movie please!!!

Why is Robert Pattinson even on there??? Come on ladies this guy is far from being hot.. We need a "REAL" man to play the part and I agree with Cynthia you need to stick with the copper hair.

The Fifty Shades books are very quick reads, but I think this author hasn't even glanced at them. Why else would she think Christian Grey is a blond? Why does she think he has a boyish build? Christian is tall, slim but muscular with broad shoulders. His hair is a deep brownish copper color. It's so easy to get books these days. I downloaded my copy from Amazon to my PC in a matter of seconds. PLEASE, PLEASE, DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!!!

christian grey - Zac Efron

Anastasia Steele - Lucy hale

Kate - Blake lively

Here's my picks for Fifty Shades of Grey (concept):

 *Christian Grey - Christian Bale

 *Anastasia Steele - Emma Watson

 *Kate Kavanagh - Kat Dennings

 *Elliot Grey - Armie Hammer

*Dr. Grace Trevelyan Grey - Jane Fonda

@jamesob5 Christian  Grey is a young 27 year old man and Christian Bale is a 38 year old man.. He's way too old for the part.

I really think Chase Crawford (nate arcibold from gossip girl) would be perfect!

Finally!! AP on top of someone elses list! Alex is a beautiful man, as well as most of the men of this list, but he fits E.L.'s description so well. I know he is only 22, but the boy sure doesn't look like it. Especially, when he grows some of that facial hair. And that's part of Chrisitans character anyways, facial hair (soft stubbles). I'm sure my friend I follow on Facebook would agree @AP4CG Thanks for sharing and I hope we can all support AP4CG!!!

@bojlevskirosie A gay man should defiantly not play the role of Mr Christian Grey..  Sorry Matt Bomer is not the perfect match..

We think that Alex Pettyfer is absolutely the right guy to play Christian Grey ... besides the fact that he's a gorgeous man we can just imagine what the hair, make up and wardrobe people would do to turn him into the perfect Christian Grey. He has been acting in films for along time now and as a young actor who has won 2 rising star awards already I think this would be a megastar making performance for him. He can play sweet and sensitive, cocky and bad ass and thats why we think that he would be able to play Christians 50 Shades just fine :)

Did you even read the book????? Christian has copper , not blonde hair!

This is your opinion your definently not one with any insight Ian is perfect for the part

first of all i dont think it really matters the color of his the books he wasnt a blonde but having reddish brown hair...copper highlightgs,,,he was written originally as a twilight fanfiction story before EL james published it as a real story changing very little but the names of the characters., this and you can find that out easily...hence why twihards want pattinison for the role of grey because he was essentially the basis of the character chrstian grey in their minds,,,,everyone has a different view of christian grey in their heads which is why i feel this will be a hard movie to cast successfully,.,,,you havent even gotten to innocent anastasia steele yet...a actress who has to look essentially innocent but doesnt mind nude scenes!  anyways i dont see why ppl like Alexander skarsgard are suprising considerations for the role...he has played dark and brooding characters before.  HE has an amazing body and isnt afraid of nude scenes by any means,,,he is more perfect for the role then half the ppl u said were acceptable....ryan gosling really??  he is attractive but adorable attractive and baby face....not the same physical facial characteristics of christian by any means,,,but see all of this is relative,,,,everyone has a different version of christian in their mind,,,so everyone is right and wrong lol

Still think Matt Bomer is the choice for me. He's got the looks, charisma, intensity and acting experience. Only thing I have heard to negate him from the role is that he is homosexual. In this day and age, who cares? He is an actor and a convincing one at that. He has a large enough fan basis to have loyal followers. But his name isn't so big that it already has a stigma from other films. Due to this, most people won't even know his own sexual interest. His body image and demeanor fit the profile and will sell to the masses. His boyish features will bring in an array of women and men to the theaters to pant over him. He has the necessary skills of convincing an audience to love and hate him at any given moment and the added benefits of being able to sing and dance. And let's face it, three movies takes time... He will still look as sexy today as he will in the next decade.

Matt Bomer maybe a good actor and very hot but Christian Grey is not a role for him.

@kh1014 Has no body heard of hair dye, in I am number 4 Alex had dark hair then dyed it blonde most of the actors people want have in mind are really dark hair, anyway, that's what hair n make up artists do to earn a living I'm for Alex Pettyfer think he would be perfect but then again if we all wanted the same it would be one dull world out there

Your crazy, Ian Somerhalder would be the perfect Christian Grey! He doesn't look his age and if you watched any of his shows you would know that he would be perfect for the part.  He definitely is hot, he would play Christian's part to perfection.  Not once did I read that Christian had blond hair...I've read the book several times.  No offense, although I  think Matt Bomer is cute, and I love my gay peeps, do you honestly think that a gay man would understand the physical attraction of a women??? I mean you want it to be believable right?  I would be thinking the whole time watching it, seriously he is not really attracted to a women, so how is this even creditable or believable?  At least pick someone who is into women for god sakes.  If it was about an obsessive infatuation with another man, then I would say, yes Matt Bomer he's hot and it would make sense, it would be believable, but not Christian Grey, that would seriously kill it for me.  Sorry, that's how I feel and my opinion.

Wow ... you love your gay peeps but if they were male or female actors you wouldn't believe in them enough to think that they could play a heterosexual role. They are called actors for a reason... because they are acting.Neil Patrick Harris plays a womanizer (very convincingly I might add) on How I Met Your Mother and he is gay in real life. Also remember a little movie called Brokeback Mountain, neither actor was gay that starred in the movie but because they were great actors they certainly made me believe they were for the length of the movie. If Matt Bomer would never have come out as a gay man in his real life I don't think anyone wouds have looked at him and thought he was gay.

@jmfancom @JosephMorgan would by far be the most intriguing choice. ;-) Would Joseph be interested to audition?

@jmfancom That would be awesome! but I don't think it will happen...

Rather than choose from these guys, why not create your own in the Fifty Faces of Grey iPhone app? Also, take the compatibility test.
