Fashion Houston Returns With Local and Global Designers
Fall is one of the most exciting times of the year...cool air, pumpkin spice lattes, the changing of the leaves...and fashion shows. Most already know that this is the season that New York's famous fashion week takes place. Houston will be having one as well.
Fashion Houston, modeled after New York Fashion week, brings together top designers and models from all over the world for four fashion filled nights. Taking place at the Wortham Center, the event, now in its third year, will showcase new and upcoming designers, both local and international in runway style shows.
This year's event will feature top names in the fashion industry such as designers, Zac Posen, Rubin Singer, Monique Lhuillier and local Chloe Dao, whose work has been featured at Project Runway. Also returning are Houston designers David Peck and Jerri Moore. Jerri Moore was chosen last year by Fashion Houston as the 2012 emerging designer, an honor given each year to a new and upcoming designer in Houston, someone that they believe shows promise. Moore says she's so excited to return, "Just to be asked back is quite an honor in itself."
The event, which will take place November 12-15, will feature four or five designers per night, at least one of those designers being from Houston. Jared Lang, the CEO of Fashion Houston says that although the show includes designers from all over the globe, he really wants to the show to focus on designers with Houston roots.
According to Moore a lot of people think that Dallas is the go-to place for fashion in Texas, but she says what people don't know is that a lot of the women in Houston are fashion savvy and praises Lang for creating Fashion Houston.
"He really put Houston on the map as far as being in the fashion industry....there are a lot of designers out there that try their hardest to manufacture enough, to get in the store and get their name out there and this event is 'a great launching pad for new designers."
Lang says he liked what New York fashion week and LA had to offer and thought that this event could really work well in Houston, being the third largest city in the United States and also adds that Houston is the perfect place for these fashion designers to sell their brands.
" It's one of the top cities for retailers in terms of sales...We have one of the best cost of living in the U.S. and therefore we have a lot of disposable income and what do we spend it on...we spend it on cars and clothes."
Lang also feels that his event differs from the fashion events in cities like New York or Milan, 'that cater to the buyers." He says Fashion Houston is more from the production aspect, less about media and is intended for a wider audience.
"It's for everyone. Everyone from the top 1 percent of Houston to the mother that lives out in the Woodlands who wants to bring her daughter and sister and maybe can't afford to go to New York."
"Fashion Houston just seems to be growing every year...The day that the tickets go on sell, they fly," Moore said.
Fashion Houston runs November 12-15 at the Wortham Center. For more information go to the Fashion Houston website. Tickets are $25 to $250.
