Picture your perfect Saturday night: the drinks are flowing, the tunes are cranking and you and your friends are dancing it up, having a grand old time. Now picture that evening exactly the same except you are covered in foam. We are not talking about the type of foam that resembles squishy Nerf balls or Pink Panther insulation either, this is foam that is caused by soap. Soapy foam!

Never been to a foam party? Apparently foam parties, which are nothing new to people who regularly frequent clubs but new to the media, are on the rise. They are exactly as you may picture; a bunch of people rocking out, drinking alcohol, swimming in foam. You may not think something as innocent as foam could put people in danger but a new report begs to differ. Just last week, MSNBC released a report on foam parties and the perils that occur there in. Apparently foam parties are ruining lives!

According to MSNBC, a recent foam event in Naples, FL sent 40 people to the hospital. As the report states, clubgoers described " intense eye pain and temporary blindness" after attending a foam-related soirée. Oh no, people are going blind (temporarily) from foam parties!

The report continues that perhaps the club in Naples may have not done the best job of diluting the soapy substance necessary for the foam, which could be the root of the injuries incurred, but this fact is glossed over.

Houston is no stranger to the foam party; in fact, local club South Beach has foam parties fairly regularly. So what the hell is a foam party? According to South Beach promoter Jose Apoodaca, who also works with several other clubs in town, a foam party is everything any other evening might include with the addition of foam. At South Beach 10-thousand cubic feet of foam is the norm and it rains down from the ceiling on select nights. Partygoers may find themselves elbow-deep in foam to contend with or party with -- their choice of how they perceive the evening.

If foam parties are new to the media, they are certainly not new in general. South Beach has been having such events since their Heaven Club days, and Apodaca remarks that these parties have been around dating back to the 1930s! He credits his club with bringing the foam back to H-town and that their lead has been followed by several other clubs in town. In the 1980s folks had some beef with the foam parties, which can be faulted with the acidity of the foam, but as of late the foam solution has been mastered for limited red-eye.

Now, precautions are made as to how concentrated the foam is, the mixture of the foam, and what supplier you are getting the foam from.

The Naples' case may have been a bad combination of negligence, but who knows? According to the report, patrons walked out with a burning sensation in their eyes, which have been compared to "shards of glass," as well as issues with inhalation of soap. Additionally, when covered in foam in a dark place, with the assistance of alcohol, partygoers are finding themselves face down on the floor.

MSNBC reports:

But more common than eye injuries, he said, are falls that happen because people can't see what's on the foam-covered floor beneath them.

So, are foam parties really dangerous? Not according to Apodaca. When asked if anyone has gotten injured at South Beach's foamy festivities he said, "No. Honestly, no." The club takes all the precautions possible, like eliminating glassware during foam party evenings.

People seem to be into foam, Apodaca comments. Since they've reinstated foam night numbers have steadily increased.

With some sensible shoes and a self-limitation on beer, a foam party may not be the next bird flu. You might want to bring a pair of goggles, though, which could be played off as cool if you know how to wear them with confidence.

If you want to check out a foam party for yourself, visit South Beach's website for dates and time.

Foaming is safe compared to Day Glowing on 2CE. Now THAT should be your next story.
