It's been ten years since Wear It Again Sam, the popular Montrose vintage clothing store, shuttered its Westheimer location and moved to the Heights. That location also closed its doors a few years ago, but that hasn't kept Sam VanBibber, the shop's proprietor, from doing what she loves: Making something new out of something old.

"I had boxes and boxes of broken jewelry, and the steampunk movement became more popular, and I thought, 'I can do this,'" VanBibber tells Art Attack.

Now, VanBibber breathes new life into springs, cogs, skeleton keys and clock faces by reassembling them into bracelets, necklaces and earrings. On September 15, VanBibber will pass on her new-Victorian aesthetic in her steampunk earring-making class, a beginner-level class offered through Art Asylum. It's the second time she's taught the class, and she says steampunk's appeal comes from people's desire to diminish waste and to create something distinctive.

"I think people are sick and tired of 'made in China,'" she says.

6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, September 15. $60 (includes materials). 1230 Houston.
