Menil Teams Up with New York's Dia Art Foundation for Cy Twombly Memorial

When Cy Twombly died on July 5, he left behind a vast body of scribbled, free-form artwork that would influence, baffle and amuse contemporaries and future artists. Though Twombly was born in Washington and died in Rome, some of his most famous works hang in Houston's Menil Collection, in the gallery bearing his name. So it's pretty fitting that a memorial honoring Twombly would be held there.

The event, which takes place on September 22, is a joint project by The Menil Collection and Dia Foundation New York, a contemporary arts organization co-founded by Fariha de Menil Friedrich -- then Philippa de Menil. Dia's original collection included work by Twombly, according to the organization's Web site.

Attendees and speakers will include Menil Director Joseph Helfenstein; de Menil Friedrich; Alessandro Twombly, the artist's son; Houston artist and jazz historian Tierney Malone; and representatives from New York's Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Harvard Art Museums.
