Cinch It! Project Runway Accessory Design Spinoff in the Works
Belts, and jewelry, and handbags -- oh my! Lifetime Television and the Weinstein Co. production powerhouse behind Project Runway have announced a new accessory design competition series to premiere in late 2011 or early 2012. The creatively named Project Accessory "will follow enterprising artists who will be put to the test to create the newest and hottest trends in accessories," according to the announcement.
The newest Project Runway spin-off (remember Models of the Runway?) held auditions in June in New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles and Miami. No details on judges, hosts, or the contestant pool have been released, but the buzz has already begun: a recent cocktail party in Manhattan celebrating the new show boasted guests such as Kenneth Cole, Molly Sims and Rachel Roy.
We are as pretty excited about the new PR spinoff--we've watched all of them (Tim Gunn's Guide to Style, On the Road with Austin and Santino), as short-lived as they were. From a practical standpoint, we wonder how the show will translate the designing and presenting of accessories into dramatic television: What will be the accessories' show version of the "Piperlime Accessories Wall"? How much visual impact can an accessories runway have, and what are the presentation alternatives? How many days does someone get to make a belt?
There is already an official Project Accessories Twitter account, and contestants have been chosen, but not officially announced. Filming began in mid-August according to the last tweet (sent August 8) from @ProjAccessory, so I anticipate more details emerging between now and the end of the current Project Runway season.
