100 Creatives: Sean Ozz

Ralph Granados
What He Does: Sean Ozz is a freelance tattoo artist who works by special appointment in North Houston, though he does travel frequently to California at the special request of favored clients.

"It's not an art form to just dabble in. It's a do-or-die kind of lifestyle choice. Would you want a heart, brain or plastic surgeon to do permanent work on you if they just dabbled in their trade on weekends?"

He is also the lead singer of the Abyss, who rocked the Houston Zombie Walk this weekend and just released their debut EP It's About Time. We recommend "Beautiful Lie" for its textbook spookiness and modern rock edge. He also does custom paints for guitars.

Why He Likes It: The freedom of being a hired tattoo gun allows Ozz to explore his art at a pace that enables him to spend time with his son. When it comes to music, what drives Ozz is the immediate emotional release of singing and performing.

What Inspires Him: "As an artist, I am really into distressed, worn fantasy with a combination of brightness. To me, this carries over into my music or lyrics. Sort of a light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel scenario. Each dark cloud has a silver lining and all the other clichés you can think of to try and cheer someone up who is teetering on the edge of depression and needing that hand on your back to let you know time heals all."

If Not This, Then What: "The ongoing joke between me and my friends is that I would make one hell of a plastic surgeon."

If Not Here, Then Where: Ozz has toyed with the idea of returning to California or moving to Austin to further his career. The American Northwest is also on his list of places worth living in after a recent trip exposed him to exotic concepts like "basements," "snow" and "seasons." Still, he plans to remain in Houston as long as his son is in school.

What's Next: "As a tattoo artist, I want to focus more on unique work and finding people who are willing to wear images that have an underlying story of hope from despair. Even if those images are told with organic, abstract shapes as well as warped, recognizable objects that overall they capture a mood or the reflection of a tale from that person's history. I shy away from the momma's babies, daddy's names and try and let people know a word is only a word but a picture is worth a thousand words."

He hopes to release a full-length album of his personal brand of dark rock in 2012.
