Houston never ceases to amaze us. Just when we thought we had seen it all (or a lot of it, anyway), something completely wild and brand-new pops into our inbox. This time, it came in the form of bloody blisters, pimples, broken bones and, of course, zombies. No, we're not talking about the latest teen drama on the CW; we are talking about Rancid House FX's upcoming Horror Special Effects 101 Workshop.

Just to be clear, Art Attack LOVES horror flicks and while the often cheesy plots and oversexed teens do a lot for us, it's the makeup and special effects that really make a movie scary. We are also getting super pumped about Bruce Campbell's appearance at the upcoming Splatterfest, so when we heard about this Saturday's workshop, we had to find out more.

The class is being led by a dynamic duo of local special-effects pros, Kristi Boul and Gilbert Cortez. The two have worked together in the makeup business for years on a variety of horror films, and last year were honored with the award for "Best Special Effects Make-up" at Splatterfest.

Boul had looked around Houston for a special-effects class and couldn't find anything like it, even at the basic level. So she and Cortez decided to start their own and extend their experience to interested parties. This is the first time they are offering the course, but if they get positive feedback, it won't be the last.

How disgusting!

If you've wanted to learn how to make your friends look like the undead, this might just be the summer workshop for you. They will be teaching students how to recreate their Splatterfest award-winning zombie. In addition, they will have students walk away with the fundamentals, including how to create compound fractures, bullet holes, bruises, black eyes and "general wounds and common injury simulation effects on a low budget," which sounds creepy to us in and of itself.

So what does Boul consider to be the best special effects/makeup out there? American Werewolf in London is her favorite horror film. Not surprisingly, designing werewolves is a huge aspiration of hers and "a real challenge," she tells us. And here we thought Taylor Lautner could just grow his hair really quickly.

The workshop will be held this Saturday, August 20, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, 1216 West Clay Street. For more information on the class, e-mail horrorsfxworkshop@gmail.com.
