Theatre Southwest Prepares for Festival of Originals
The plays are submitted to the theater for its annual Festival of Originals, a series of original one-act plays, each with its own director and cast. The festival, which begins July 15, is in its 14th year and gives local and national playwrights a chance to see their work fully produced. Some have gone on to be produced in New York, Los Angeles and elsewhere.
One of Holloway's favorite stories this year is Lobster Man by Jonathan Cook, which she describes as a dreamlike, magical story about the last two people on earth. Much of it is pantomimed, adding to the dreamy and beautiful quality of the work.
Still, reading that many plays, as nice as it can be, has its drawbacks as well.
"We sometimes have to fight having a theme," she says. "Depending on what they write about and what hot topics are out there, there are always like 100 scripts all on the same topic."
