100 Creatives: Chandos Dodson

Chandos Dodson
What she does:
Chandos Dodson is an interior designer who owns Chandos Interiors. She does both corporate and residential properties in a style best described as luxury with whimsy.

Dodson says her work is a mutual process between designer and client. "I really try to take into account what my clients' needs are and what they are looking for," she says. But even though her projects are tailored to specific clients and are all very different from one another, the undercurrent of Dodson's classy design is unmistakable. She says, "there's always some glam involved... I usually like a pop of color or some funky graphic wallpaper."

Why she likes it:
With a Type-A personality, Dodson revels in the organization, planning, and plan execution that a design project entails. "I love the thrill of a start-to-finish project, having a blank piece of paper and then see where that can lead," she says. Dodson was also drawn to the profession because it connects creativity with professionalism. "It combines fashion, color, art, and business, all things that were my passions for a career," she says.

What inspires her:
Dodson's mother was an antique dealer in Houston, so she developed a regard for furniture at a young age. Being exposed to new furniture and art gives Dodson fresh ideas for design. She's also an huge fan of Million Dollar Decorator.

Her Proudest moment:
"My proudest moment was when House Beautiful (a national interior decorating magazine) named us one of the top 20 up and coming design firms in the country last year," Dodson says.

If not this, then what?
Either the field of psychology or law could be a good fit for Dodson because both come into play when she deals with clients. It's common for clients to feel anxiety about the decision process, after all the environment that is going to surround them and present to others who they are is at stake.

Dodson says, "I try to be compatible and help them make the most appropriate choices on their wants, but there are some times when I have to say no." That's why people hire a professional in the first place.

What's next?
This August, Dodson is taking the plunge into marriage. On the business side she's just opened a new office in Dallas, and hopes to expand her firm into more cities.

A final word:
Since design is Dodson's passion it follows that she'd be concerned about the aesthetic of Houston's buildings. She says, "if you are doing any type of new construction, do it well. Living in a city without zoning isn't an excuse not to put heart and soul into the design."
