Domingo Garcia
Adios, Mahatma (1988)
The Museum of Fine Arts recently acquired Adios, Mahatma, a 1988 portrait of Mahatma Gandhi painted by influential Puerto Rican artist Domingo García (Domingo), founder of the Galería Campeche in San Juan. The portrait is a gift to the museum by the Houston-based law firm Zimmerman, Axelrad, Meyer, Stern & Wise. It will be on permanent display in the Ancient and Modern Indian exhibition.

The haunting painting shows the Indian spiritual leader Mahatma Gandhi gazing resolutely outward from a dark, all-encompassing background. Domingo's expressionist tendencies are clear in the wispy white lines and emotional impact of the portrait.

Domingo was raised primarily in New York and educated in Europe. He founded his Galería Campeche in 1958 and is considered a pioneer in Puerto Rican art.
